MSc in Computer-Based Management Information System

 This degree offers a mixture of courses from the Departments of Computer Science and Management Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences). It trains people to take up middle-management positions in the Information Technology sector and/or to take on positions as management consultants and business analysts.

Objectives

This programme will provide participants with:

  • A comprehensive understanding of how information systems are changing organizational structures and how they can be used effectively to create a basis of competitive advantage;
  • A comprehensive introduction to the principles of management;
  • A comprehensive introduction to methods used in managing the development of computer-based systems;
  • Detailed exposure to new advances in information technology.

Entry Requirements

Three categories of students are considered - students with:

  • B.Sc. in Management Studies
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science
  • Bachelors in any other field

A good second class degree, typically in a business related area or in Computer Science. Candidates are also normally required to have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field. Only students with a strong upper second class honours degree or better are allowed to enter the programme directly from the undergraduate programme.

Applicants must provide evidence that they will be able to meet the strenuous requirements of the programme:

  • unusually intensive study
  • excellence in either Computer Science or Management Information Systems
  • a strong aptitude for the other discipline and
  • the ability to effectively synthesize large amounts of information

Admission Procedures

Students should apply for admission through the post-graduate section.

Applications meeting the initial selection criteria will be contacted in April of each year and some candidates may be invited for an interview on campus. Final decisions will be made by the beginning of May, each year

Programme Structure

Students who do not have any of the four courses listed below, or their equivalent versions1, will be required to do two of them during the summer prior to entering the programme in September; and the other two the following summer. These courses will be offered by the programme during the months of June and July. However, students can do the required courses at approved educational institutions. The student will meet the costs for these courses. These are non-credit courses; however, students must pass these courses as part of the requirements to graduate.

**: The option will be available when at least 20 students are registered for each of the courses (MS62T & MS62R).
