Why should we educate for sustainable development? Why ESD?

Who teaches our children about this? Dear Colleagues,This is our second day and today we will explore why we (should) educate for sustainable development. It is topic that we had begun to discuss yesterday.  I invite you to look at the photo (please click display image if you don’t see photos) of a flooded town  (Photos are those of Ms. Novelette Douglas). My question is where and when do we teach our students about these issues: their causes, their effects, the attitudes, the values that may be determining such matters? How do we teach our students so that they see how connected our social and economic issues are to our natural environment? How do we teach them to address these issues and/or prepare to deal with and cope with them? What thinking skills will they need to be taught?Should these be issues in our curriculum?  If so, are they in the curriculum you use or monitor?
