ABOUT THE BOOK

WHITE SQUALL ON THE LAND - NARRATIVES OF RESILIENT CARIBBEAN PEOPLE
The Caribbean has been a place of European conquest, African enslavement and Asian indentureship and one in which many have suffered from hunger. This hunger is captured in the title as “white squall” which is a kind of hunger rendering the corners of a person’s mouth white with dried spittle. This hunger describes a state of hardship, which still persist in the region. This book explores the psychological concept of resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity in the Caribbean population. The understanding of resilience is central to the development of the human resources in the Caribbean.

In the face of “white squall” some migrate on to face racism, mental illnesses and new forms of alienation overseas while others remain at home where some thrive and others barely survive.  This book is based on research undertaken for a PhD thesis at the University of Birmingham on the migration and mental health using case studies, focus groups and in depth interviews of African Caribbean People with mental illness in addition to well people. Their narratives form a part of the book as well as those of students at the University of the West Indies Mona who excel in spite of hardships. White Squall on the Land: Narratives of Resilient Caribbean people provides a space for the group of the Caribbean people in this book to speak of their victories over adversity.
