Accommodations
For many students the issue of suitable accommodation while studying is a major cause of concern. Residential spaces on campus are limited with allocations dependent on factors such as need and economic circumstances. It is therefore very important that you begin to explore all available options.
Living on Hall
There are six halls of residence at the University of the West Indies Mona; four mixed gender residences -Aston Preston, Irvine, Rex Nettleford and Taylor and two single-sex halls, Chancellor (all male) and Mary Seacole (all female). Together they house just over two thousand students.
Offer of Accommodation
Each student is assigned to a hall of residence; however, please note that assignment to a hall does not mean that you have a room in the hall of residence. You should confirm with the Student Services Manager of the hall of residence your acceptance into hall. This offer of accommodation should be accompanied by a letter which will give details such as the date you are expected to present yourself at the hall and the costs associated with residence.
Remember that you have to confirm that you were offered a place on hall before you pack up and move on to the campus. You may be accepted to live in either a single or a double room, depending on the hall to which you applied. Single rooms cost more than double rooms. Please feel free to call the hall office to make enquiries or visit here for more information.
What to Bring
The hall will send you a list of things you need to take with you. Please pay attention to this list and be guided by it. You may also wish to take family pictures, curtains, towels, and sheets. Have fun decorating your room to make it homey and comfortable, after all this will be your home for the next year.
Paying your Hall Fees
Hall fees can be paid either in full or by semester. If you choose to pay by semester find out what the stipulated amount is for each semester. You do not have to come on campus to pay your fees; they can be paid on-line with a credit card, at any branch of National Commercial Bank. Do not carry cash to pay your fees. Find out what the amounts are and pay them at the NCB branch nearest to your home. You are expected to show evidence of payment when you come on campus. A word of advice: there is a branch of NCB on campus but usually at this time of the year the lines are long and the wait is even longer so you should explore other options.
Off-Campus Accommodation
The Lodgings Office in the Office of Student Services and Development will assist you to find housing off-campus. Many persons living in areas such as Mona and Hope Pastures rent rooms, studios and flats to students. However, there is a great demand for housing and so it may be necessary for you to live further away from campus than may be ideal.
