Launch of Engineering Programme at UWI, Mona
The University of the West Indies, Mona will officially launch its Bachelor of Science degree Programme in Engineering on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:30 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Senator Dr. the Honourable Ronald Robinson, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be the guest speaker on this occasion.
Olympian, Hon. Usain Bolt Speaks at the UWI, Mona Athletics Programme Launch and Seminar Series
The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the official Launch of the UWI Athletics Initiative and 2009/10 Seminar Series on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 10 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.
At the Launch speakers will include Mona’s Principal, Professor the Hon. Gordon Shirley, Neville “Teddy’ McCook, IAAF Area Representative, Glen Mills, President of the Racers’ Track Club and Olympian, the Honourable Usain Bolt
The first seminar in the 2009-2010 Sports seminar series titled, “The History of our International Track and Field Success” takes place immediately following the launch. Director of Sports, UWI, Mona, Ms. Grace Jackson, will deliver the address.
UWI to Screen Documentary Film on the Life of Historian and Activist, Walter Rodney
The Institute of Cultural Studies, UWI, Mona as part of the annual Walter Rodney Lecture Series will host the new documentary, “W.A.R. Stories: Walter Anthony Rodney”, directed by Clairmont Chung on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.. The film covers the life of world renowned, historian, author and activist Dr. Walter Rodney who was assassinated on Friday, June 13, 1980, at age 38, in his native Guyana.
Book Launch: The Case for Selective User Fees in Health Care
Dr. Omar Davies, Opposition spokesperson on Finance will be the guest speaker at the launch of the book, “The Case for Selective Fees in Health Care” which takes place on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 8:30 am at the Alhambra Inn. The book is authoured by UWI academics: Professor Wilma Bailey, Dr. Georgiana Gordon-Strachan, Dr. Aldrie Henry-Lee and Dr. Dillion Alleyne, Senior Health Economist, Bahamian Government, Dr. Stanley Lalta and Jasper Barnett, Health Economist, Ministry of Health, Jamaica.

The UWI, Mona 2009 Ceremonies for the Presentation of Graduates will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 on the Graduation Lawns, Mona Campus. Graduates from the Faculties of Pure and Applied Sciences and Medical Sciences will be presented at 10 am while graduates from the Faculty of Social Sciences will presented at 5:30 pm. Five to be Conferred with Honorary Degrees at UWI Graduation 2009
Five honorary degrees will be conferred at the UWI, Mona graduation ceremonies which are being staged in three sessions, Friday, November 6 at 5:30 pm and Saturday, November 7 at 10 am and 5:30 pm. Recipients of honorary degrees are the Honourable John Issa, Mr. John Maxwell, the Honourable Oliver F. Clarke, Dr. Anne Walmsley and Professor Colin A Palmer.
At the Ceremony on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 5:30 pm Honourable Oliver F. Clarke, Chairman and Managing Director of the Gleaner Company will receive a Doctor of Laws degree. He is often credited with turning one of the oldest newspaper publishers in the region into a very successful media enterprise. He is the recipient of Jamaica’s prestigious national honour, the Order of Jamaica.
Five to be Recognized at VC Awards For Excellence
Five members of the academic staff at the Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine Campuses of UWI will receive the prestigious 2008/ 9 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.

World of Work Seminar Series
Placement and Career Services in the Office of Student Services and Development, UWI, Mona continues with its World of Work seminar series this week examining the topic, “Writing Impressive Resumes and Cover Letters.” The seminar takes place on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 3 pm at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. The presenter will be Merrit Henry, Student Services Manager, Placement and Career Services, UWI, Mona.
The seminar series are designed to provide practical career and self development pointers for UWI students. Upcoming seminars will address topics such as: Interviewing, Entrepreneurship and Employment Opportunities.

Marcus Garvey Explored at Documentary Showing
The University of the West Indies, Mona Heritage Month Committee and the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona presents a documentary titled, “Look for Me in the Whirlwind”, a feature on Marcus Garvey, Jamaica’s first national hero. The documentary showing takes place on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre.
The documentary details the life of Marcus Garvey and the contribution to the black community and his involvement in black empowerment through the Universal Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.).

Linguistics Lecture
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy has organised a lecture on Friday, October 30 at 3 pm at the School Lecture Theatre, Department of Education, UWI, Mona. The lecture entitled “Variationist Sociolinguistics and the Niger-Congo Languages of West Africa” will be delivered by Professor John Victor Singler.
Professor John Victor Singler is a Professor of Linguistics at New York University (USA) and organiser of the African Linguistics School in Accra, Ghana (2009).
‘Blood, Bullets and Bodies: Sexual Politics Below Jamaica’s Poverty Line’
The Institute for Gender and Development Studies Mona Unit hosts the re-launch of the book, ‘Blood, Bullets and Bodies: Sexual Politics Below Jamaica’s Poverty Line’ on Monday, November 2, 2009 starting at 5 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. The re-launch will also feature a documentary showing titled, ‘Setting the Skin Tone’. The book and documentary are products of author, academic, video-documentalist and Development Consultant, Dr Imani Tafari- Ama. Dr. Carolyn Cooper Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona will officially review and re-launch the book.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences hosts its annual Student Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Ceremony will see the recognition of outstanding student performers for the last academic year.
Qualitative Inquiry in the Caribbean Conference
“Qualitative Research for Caribbean Development” is the theme of the first Qualitative Inquiry Conference being hosted by the School of Education, UWI, Mona on October 29-31, 2009. The Conference officially opens with an Opening Ceremony on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 9 am at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge and Conference Centre where Professor Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Madison will deliver the keynote address. Over the two day Conference other featured addresses will be delivered by Professor Frances Stage, New York City University and from UWI, Mona, Professor Aggrey Brown and Professor Barry Chevannes.
Sharpen Your Test Taking Skills
The University Health Centre hosts the final study skills workshop in its series on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). The workshop will explore Test Taking Skills. It is designed to share practical test taking techniques and assist students in improving their academic performance.

Distinguished Lecture
The Department of Medicine, UWI, Mona hosts the annual Professor Eric Cruickshank Distinguished Lecture on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 5 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
The lecture is entitled, “The Genesis and Evolution of Renal Replacement Therapy in the Caribbean” and will be delivered by Professor George Nicholson, Professor Emeritus, Department of Medicine, UWI, Cave Hill.
UWI Plays Tribute to the Late Trevor Rhone
“Two Can Play” an award-winning comedy by the late Trevor Rhone is being staged by the University Players to pay tribute to him with six performances from Saturday October 17 to Sunday October 25 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona. The performance on Sunday, October 18 at 6 pm saw proceeds being donated to the McSyl Basic School in Bellas Gate, to which Mr. Trevor Rhone had committed his support shortly before his passing
Two Can Play, a work which won the award for Best Jamaican Play in 1982, features performances by 2008 Actor Boy Award nominees Nadean Rawlins and Alwyn Scott, and is directed by Brian Heap, who also won this year’s award for Best Director.
Moonbeam Award Goes to UWI Faculty
Michael Holgate, Assistant Staff Tutor at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI Mona, won a Moonbeam Children award for his novel, “Night of the Indigo”. The novel also won a silver award in the young adult - religious/spirituality category. “Night of the Indigo” is available in local bookstores and online or through Macmillan Caribbean publishers and its distributors.
