Coast-snap Project in Action at PRML

The Coast-snap project (part of the SARTRAC- Sargassum project) was initiated at the Port Royal Marine Laboratory (PRML) between January 15 and 18, 2024.  The project is a collaboration between the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona and  University of Southampton (UK) and The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico), and involved mounting a continuously recording fixed camera as well as a phone mount to facilitate ‘citizen science’ at the PRML.  The cameras will be incorporated into the outreach tours of the lab allowing visitors to monitor sargassum movement near Port Royal and learn about the seaweed.  The systems will be replicated around as many beaches in Jamaica as possible.
