Besides, the skills acquired by a student of History i.e.: analytical, critical thinking, objectivity and problem solving, to name a few, which are “life skills”.

These skills can be applied to our lives in a very practical way in whatever field we are involved, be it politics, law, social sciences, natural sciences, business, journalism, academia etc. In my line of work as a police officer, for example, I have seen the real benefits of my exposure to History and the skills it offers almost on a daily basis. I have a far greater appreciation of the current socio-political environment, bearing in mind its history; I approach issues that come to my attention more objectively and open-mindedly; and I have been told that the quality of my reasoning and critical thinking is at a very high level. Hence, I am able to earn the respect of my colleagues and superiors in law enforcement, and, generally, the vast number of persons with whom I interact daily. My training in History, critical to my intellectual development, has played a major role in this regard; studying History at the University of the West Indies Mona has, undoubtedly, paid personal and professional dividends. I have found there are few other subjects that prepare us in the way History does. In closing, there is a lot that History has to offer, so enrol and enjoy.
