Welcome
Welcome to the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of the West Indies, Mona. The Department of History is one of the oldest departments of the UWI, opening its doors with the arrival of Professor John Parry in 1949. In 1986 Mr. Edward Moulton-Barrett made a benefaction to the University, which permitted the establishment of a lectureship in Archaeology attached to the Department of History, which was renamed in February 2003 to become the Department of History and Archaeology.
The chief objective of the Department is to provide a thorough understanding of the historical development of the Caribbean. The scope and breadth of the department's offerings extends far beyond the region, covering specialized research and teaching in European, African, North American, Asian, and global history. The department presently offers programmes leading to B.A., M.A., M.Phil. and PhD degrees.
