Edward Ghartey Promoted To Professor

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Edward Ghartey, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona Campus to the rank of Professor.

 Professor Ghartey holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ghana (1979) the Master of Arts degree from Acadia University Canada (1983) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Dalhousie University Canada (1987). 

Edward Ghartey joined the staff of the UWI, Mona in 1993 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1998. Prior to joining the staff, he was an Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Howard University, USA (1988-1993).

Professor Ghartey has a distinguished record of original work. His main areas of research and publication focus are on international finance, public finance, macroeconomic and monetary policy issues. He has carried out applied work on countries and regions such as Ghana, Jamaica and the Caribbean that have received little attention in the literature. He has also published on export- led economic growth for Japan, Taiwan and the US. The main contribution of his work is his application of recently developed econometric techniques to new questions and using answers derived to inform policy. He has also applied advanced time-series techniques to a wide variety of policy related issues in emerging markets, particularly Ghana and the Caribbean.

Professor Ghartey has published several articles in international refereed journals, monographs, chapters in books as well as six international conference proceedings. His publications include titles such as “Is the Caribbean Community an Optimum Currency Area” which contributed to the debate on whether the Caribbean Community is an optimum currency area. Another, “Random Walk as a Universal Test of Weak-Form Foreign Exchange Market Efficiency: A Proof” provided a test for foreign exchange market efficiency for developing countries that do not have  a forward foreign market.

He is a director of African Finance and Economics Association, an Associate Editor, Frontiers in Finance and Economics (2004-present), an advisory board member of the International Banking, Economic and Finance Association formerly North American Economics and Finance Association (1997-2010), Athenian Policy Forum, American Economic Association, The Royal Economics Society and several other academic associations. 

Professor Ghartey has been the recipient of several University of the West Indies, Research and Publication Awards for excellence in his field. He has also received grants from Ford Foundation, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education Research Council in the US, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He has chaired several and presented more than forty completed papers at distinguished academic meetings and international conferences in the US, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean region.
