Security Initiatives Achieve Success

As part of the ongoing strategy to reduce criminal activities on The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus, the Police have increased covert activities to deal with a spike in car break–ins.

During March-April 2010, there were ten (10) arrests. The Police made two (2) significant break-throughs in this regard: one person was held while attempting to break into a car on campus and has confessed to several counts of car break-ins which coincided with statements from complainants.

In St Ann, a car stolen from the Mona Campus was recovered by the Police. The driver is now in custody at the Half Way Tree Lock-up and is cooperating with the Police Investigators.

The Campus Police have also stepped up the drive to have pedal and motor cyclists comply with the regulations relating to use of walk-ways. Summonses are being served on those found breaching the regulations.

The University urges members of the campus community to continue taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property as well as giving their continued support to the Campus Security Services in this ongoing effort.
