The University of the West Indies, in collaboration with Sterling Asset Management, has completed the Final Round of the 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad.  A total of 49 students sat the Final Round Examination, which was held on April 17, 2010.  These students came from 21 high schools throughout Jamaica.  After assessing the examination scripts, the Department of Mathematics has selected five students for the 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Team. They are: Aaron Johnson, Campion College; Nicholas McFarlane, Ardenne High School; Daniel Chin, Glenmuir High School ; Sanjae King, (First Alternate) Glenmuir High School  and Jhanelle Thomas, (Second Alternate) Campion College

The team includes the top three performers on the Final Round examination.  These members will participate in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Regional Mathematical Olympiad.  This will be held from May 26—June 1, 2010, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.  The team also includes the fourth and fifth best performers on the Final round examination.  They have been named as alternate selections.  They will prepare for the Regional Olympiad with the rest of the team and be ready to participate if one or more of the first three members are unable to do so. 

Prior to taking part in the Olympiad in Puerto Rico, team members and medalists will be honoured at an Awards Ceremony hosted by the UWI and Sterling Asset Management on Saturday May 8.

The Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad is part of an attempt by the Department of Mathematics, Mona to identify mathematically talented students, encourage them in their studies, and provide extra resources and special training for them. In the longer term, the Department also expects to encourage all students, even those of more average abilities, to take up a more interesting and challenging set of experiences.  It is expected that teachers and students across the spectrum will engage in better and more satisfying mathematical activities in their classrooms.
