Statement with Respect to the Response of The UWI, Mona Campus to Outbreak of Violence in Jamaica

The University of the West Indies, Mona has taken note of the concerns that the outbreak of violence on the island has created with our international partner Universities and Governments with nationals studying on the Campus.

Bearing in mind that the Campus is some distance away from the areas of unrest, the security risk assessment conducted by our Director of Security, Assistant Commissioner of Police Keith Gardner, has indicated that the threat against life and property on the campus is low. Nonetheless, we have urged members of the community to take all necessary precautions once they leave the campus, and to monitor radio reports for an up-to-date assessment of the situation.

A number of steps have been taken to ensure the safety of international and CARICOM students who may have remained either on or off-campus since the semester ended on May 12:

  • The  International Students Office has made contact with all international  and CARICOM students who are still at Mona, sensitizing them to security precautions and, if they are off campus,  to the need for them to be responsible and not place themselves in harm’s way.
  • The University Health Centre has made counselors available for any student who may feel the need for such services
  • There is an escort service available on the Campus at night, if needed
  • The Campus provides transportation and security personnel for students who need to be taken to the airport

While The UWI, Mona recognizes that the security situation is a significant national problem, the Campus remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of our students.
