Update on recent violence in West Kingston

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona assures international partner universities and Governments with nationals studying on the Campus that throughout the events that unfolded between May 24th and 26th in Kingston, Jamaica the safety and well being of students at the Mona Campus was never compromised.  The Campus remained a safe place for the students and its operations continued as usual.

All non-Jamaican students were contacted to ensure that they were observing suggested safety precautions.  In addition to this our Campus Security team headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Keith Gardner consistently assessed and updated the Campus community on any developments.

It is important to note that the Mona Campus is some distance away from the area of disturbance.  We recognize that the media carried very disturbing pictures and understand that without knowledge of the landscape of Jamaica, the average person would, indeed, have concerns about visiting the island.

We have no reservation in informing all our international partners that Mona remains a safe place to study and Kingston is no more dangerous to be in than any other metropolitan city of the world.
