The UWI Open Campus Expands to St. Elizabeth in Jamaica

St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, May, 2012: Persons in and around Lititz in the parish of St. Elizabeth in Jamaica now have access to tertiary-level education and professional courses with the recent opening of  the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus at that location.  Many persons have already registered for the first set of three-month certificate courses for May 2012. In addition, applications are now open to all prospective students to start regional programmes at the Bachelors and Masters level in September 2012.

Dr. Jerome Miller-Vaz, Head of the Open Campus Jamaica Western Division,  states that the “the UWI Open Campus has always championed the working adult student through its distinctive practices of accessibility, flexibility, and affordability, all of which allow our students the benefits of working and studying on their own time. With our new presence in Lititz, it brings our locations in Jamaica to 12 centres, with more to come.  I am very proud to be a part of the UWI as we continue to offer more learning opportunities to Jamaican and Caribbean communities like Lititz with cutting-edge professional development courses and methods of teaching and learning”.

The UWI Open Campus helped to pioneer the conveniences that many students across the Caribbean region now enjoy, including flexible class schedules, evening classes, continuous enrollment, digital access to library and learning resources, audio- and video-conferencing, online classes, an online student management system, and a region-wide academic network where students all over the region can interact.

As with its sister UWI campuses at Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine, all the regional degree programmes, certificates and diplomas offered by the Open Campus are assessed and approved by a Campus Academic Board and by the central UWI Boards for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, as well as monitored by the Quality Assurance Unit, and the national accreditation boards in each traditional UWI campus country.
