Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Team Announced

The Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Organising Committee has announced the local team to the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Regional Mathematical Olympiad, which will take place from June 15 to 23 in San Salvador, El Salvador.

They are Zale Young (captain), Campion College; Romain Jones, Campion College; Anphernee Wilson, Herbert Morrison Technical High School; Martin McIntosh, Cornwall College; and Tchakamau Ra, Immaculate Conception High School.

The top three performers, Young, Jones and Wilson will represent the country, while McIntosh and Ra are substitutes.  The two will prepare for the Regional Olympiad with the rest of the team and be ready to participate if one of the first three members is unable to do so.  In this case, McIntosh, the first alternate, would stand in.

The five-member team was selected from among 112 students from 27 high schools who sat the May 5 final round examination in the 2012 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad. The UWI Mona Department of Mathematics, which presented the event, selected 16 students for medals.  They included the three best performers from Grades 7 through 11.  An additional 34 students received an honourable mention.  The 50 awardees comprised the top 10 performers in each grade, and represented 18 schools across the island.
