Mona Wins UWI Games Championship Title

The University of the West Indies Mona campus has been crowned champions of the recently concluded UWI Games 2013.

Host campus Mona beat Cave Hill from Barbados and St. Augustine from Trinidad and Tobago in a closely contested championship battle fought by three of the four UWI campuses.

At the last whistle, Mona and Cave Hill had scored overall point standings of 96 and 92 respectively, and St. Augustine was third place with 64 points.

The events won by Mona were: female basketball, netball, male football, male volleyball, table tennis, and track and field. Cave Hill won male basketball, cricket, male and female hockey, female volleyball and lawn tennis; the St. Augustine team took the female football and swimming titles.

This year, in an effort to strengthen integration amongst the campuses special events were included involving athletes and supporters. The culture night, games night and a special outreach project were new additions to the games and proved a success. The outreach project was conducted on Labour Day, May 23rd and saw scores of student athletes giving back to the children of the Maxfield Park Children’s’ Home. They helped with the cleaning and beautification of the compound and interacted with the children.

Cave Hill had won the previous championships when they hosted the Games in 2011.  The next UWI Games is slated for 2015 and will be hosted by St. Augustine campus. UWI Games 2013 was sponsored by Addidas, Advanced Integrated Systems, Digicel, Newstalk 93FM, KLAS FM, ZDA, Kier, Hylite, and Hi-Lo.
