UWI Mona’s Dr Tannecia Stephenson appointed to Global Science Team

Dr. Tannecia Stephenson, lecturer in the Department of Physics and a member of the Climate Studies Group, Mona, was recently appointed by the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) as a member of the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) Science Advisory Team (CORDEX-SAT) and will serve a three year term starting in 2014.

Her research interests are Caribbean climate variability, climate extremes, seasonal predictions using statistical models and statistical downscaling.  She has been affiliated with a number of climate variability and change projects and has published a number of journal articles, technical reports and short monograph with collaborators.  Her work experience includes conducting research as a visiting fellow at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Stephenson expressed her feelings about her recent appointment: “I am honoured to be appointed to this team and I am delighted to see that the work of the Climate Studies Group, Mona is being recognized internationally once again.”

Dr. Stephenson’s work contribution will provide us with additional projections of how the climate of the Caribbean may change in the future and the results will be one of the motivations for the decisions made by the international community on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

She continues to explain her expectations for her contributions to Climate Variability and Change research.

“I look forward to participating in the next phase of experimental designs aimed at obtaining future climate information over a number of regions globally, including the Caribbean, and incorporating statistical downscaling techniques…”Dr. Stephenson will also help establish and implement an agreed framework for global participation in the next phase of the CORDEX project and for catalyzing the associated experiment activities, especially related to statistical downscaling.

The Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) is a program activity of the WCRP through its Working Group for Regional Climate (WGRC). It seeks to develop regional climate change projections for all terrestrial regions using both dynamical and statistical downscaling methods. The members of the Science Advisory Team (SAT) come from different areas of the globe; ranging from USA, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Australia, India, Korea and now Jamaica.
