The West Indian Medical Journal (WIMJ) – the flagship journal for dissemination of medical research information in the English-speaking Caribbean for more than 60 years, is broadening its reach in the technological age by adding open access – WIMJ Open – to its existing traditional print and subscription-based format.  

With WIMJ Open,

•    Authors are empowered to publish their manuscripts through an open access medium;
•    Articles are freely available in a shorter period of time via the Internet to end users worldwide, who can copy, share, and even adapt or build upon on existing knowledge as long as the work is correctly credited;
•    Work published via this medium are more frequently cited as it is accessible and available to a wider cross-section of people who do not have to pay to access and use it, as is the case with subscription-based journals;
•    All articles submitted for publication undergo the same vigorous peer-review process and once published, are indexed in the same international databases as the West Indian Medical Journal;
•    The author or researcher retains copyright of published work through the use of a Creative Commons licence;
•    No payments are necessary for colour photographs/figures or reprints since all articles are only published online; and
•    Once articles are accepted, a one-time payment of US$1000 is required (payable on an author-pays-service basis) before the manuscript can be published.
There is a special introductory offer of US$500 to authors/researchers who desire to publish their work in WIMJ Open.
