CAPE Lecture series reaches out to High School students of History

The Department of History and Archaeology will host its annual CAPE History Lecture Series on April 5th and 12th in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education.

The lectures begin on both days at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m. High schools within and outside the Corporate Area have been invited to attend.

The lectures are part of the annual outreach of the Department to high school students and teachers of CAPE History. This year the focus will be on themes from Units One and Two of the syllabus. These include, European and West African Contact before 1492, Final Dismantlement of the Slave Systems, 1807 – 1886, Haiti 1804 – 1825 (Attempts by Haiti’s revolutionary leaders to create a free society between 1804 and 1825), Atlantic Settlements to 1800 (European Settlement and Rivalry in the Americas to 1800), Industrial Revolutions and Colonialism (The Economic Linkages between the Industrial Revolution in England and the Atlantic Economy).

The lecturers include Professor Veront Satchell, Drs. Dave Gosse, Matthew Smith, Robert Sierakowski, Jonathan Dalby and James Robertson.

This year, Mr. Christopher Graham, a MPhil student of the department and an avid member of the outreach team will give a talk to the students on the importance and value of studying history.
