UWI degrees now accepted in China

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the official recognition of its degrees in China. 

University Director of UWI’s IGDS to speak at London Forum

University Director of The University of the West Indies’ (The UWI) Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), Professor Verene Shepherd will address more than 500 parliamentarians at the inaugural Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) Regional Hot Topics (RHT). The forum is carded for December 15 at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel in London from 2-5 pm (UK time). 

GOJ, The UWI and partners to host Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Caribbean Visit

The Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation and The University of the West Indies will host a Caribbean Outreach event by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world body that assesses the science related to climate change, on November 29-December 1, 2016.

The Caribbean Development Bank, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, the Inter-American Development Bank and Panos Caribbean are also partnering with the Ministry and The UWI to host the event.

Gillian M. S. Bristol Named New Director of The Latin American Caribbean Centre

The University of the West Indies, Vice-Chancellery. 10 November 2016 – Gillian M.S.  Bristol, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Grenada to the United States of America, has been appointed Director of The University of the West Indies’ Latin American Caribbean Centre (LACC), effective August 1st 2016. 
 

Dominica recognises Professor Sir Hilary Beckles with one of the country’s highest awards

The Government of Dominica has conferred the country’s second highest state award – the Sisserou Award of Honour on Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles. The award was presented by President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Angelo Savarin, at a ceremony earlier today, November 3, 2016; as part of Dominica’s 38th Independence celebrations. 

The Sisserou Award of Honour, created in 1967, is named after the national bird, the Sisserou (imperial amazon/Amazona imperialis) – a parrot indigenous only to Dominica, particularly near the island’s rainforest. 

MSBM 2nd Business and Management Conference to focus on the private sector and sustainable development strategies

 Mona School of Business and Management will be hosting its second business and management conference under the theme - ‘Connecting The Dots: Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development on November 9-11, 2016 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The main speakers at this year’s event are Dr. John Sviokla, Principal and U.S advisory innovation leader- Pricewaterhousecoopers,  Mr Paul B. Scott, President of the PSOJ, and Neil  McFarlane, Chief for the New York Liaison Office for United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNISDR.

Mona School of Engineering Student chosen as finalist for Young Lighter of the Year

Aisha Robinson has been selected as one of four finalists for the Society of Light and Lighting’s (SLL) Young lighter of the year award. The final year Mona School of Engineering student is also a technician/lighting designer at the Phillip Sherlock Center for the Creative Arts. She will be presenting her paper titled “A Visible Light Communication Scheme for Use as Accent Lighting.” at the Lux Live exhibition to be held at the London ExCel Centre on 23-24 November 2016. 

UWI Awardees Challenged to Sustain Caribbean Excellence

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles called for a concerted effort to sustain excellence in the Caribbean. He was delivering the address at the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence 2015/2016 on Thursday 19 October, 2016, when the regional University honoured six persons and one department for exemplary service. The seven recipients were:

·  Dr Farid Youssef, Department of Pre-Clinical Sciences, St Augustine Campus | Excellence Award for Teaching.

·  Professor Jayaraj Jayaraman, Department of Life Sciences, St Augustine Campus | Excellence Award for Research Accomplishments

UWI Recognises Excellence with Vice-Chancellor’s Awards

Seven awards for excellence will be presented at The UWI’s 2015/2016 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. A University tradition for more than 20 years, the awards recognise excellence in teaching, administration and research accomplishments, service to the university community, contributions to public service, and all-round excellence in a combination of two or more of these core areas. A departmental award is also given for service and operational excellence. The presentation ceremony which is rotated annually among The University’s four campuses takes place on 19 October, 2016 at The UWI St Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago.  

The 2015/2016 awardees are as follows: 

HENROY SCARLETT ELECTED TO CHAIR, INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH REGION OF THE AMERICAS

Lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona, Dr. Henroy Scarlett, has been elected as the Chair, International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) Region of the Americas, which includes the USA, Canada, Jamaica, and Haiti. He has also been appointed as a Director on the Board of the IFEH.
