Tackling the world’s pressing challenges - The UWI hosts a conversation with the Commonwealth Secretary-General

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, QC, invites Caribbean youth to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges as The University of the West Indies hosts a Town Hall meeting at its Regional Headquarters, Mona, Jamaica on Friday 8 July, 2016. The special event which begins at 4:00 pm (Jamaica time), will also be livestreamed via http://live.mona.uwi.edu.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Mona Webber, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology at Mona to the rank of Professor with effect from January 21, 2016.

DR. LOU ANNE BARCLAY PROMOTED TO THE RANK OF PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Lou Anne Barclay, Senior Lecturer and Academic Director of the DBA Programme, Mona School of Business and Management, Faculty of Social Sciences at Mona to the rank of Professor in International Business with effect from January 21, 2016.

Professor Barclay holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (1984) and the Master of Science Degree Economics (1990) from The UWI, St. Augustine as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in International Business (1998) from Warwick Business School, The University of Warwick, United Kingdom. 

Oxford’s First Female Vice-Chancellor to Receive UWI Honorary Degree

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce that an honorary doctor of laws degree will be conferred on the University of Oxford’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Louise Richardson. The conferral will take place at a special convocation in the Assembly Hall at The UWI’s Mona Campus in Jamaica on 10 June, 2016, beginning at 5:00 p.m. (EST).

The decision of the conferral was confirmed at The UWI’s University Council Meeting on 29 April, 2016 Honorary degrees are awarded to persons of eminence in the Arts, Sciences or some other field of intellectual endeavour or made outstanding regional or international contributions in areas served by the University or otherwise. 

Professor Renn Holness to receive Neurosurgery Lifetime Achievement Award

UWI, Mona graduate and recipient of the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) from The UWI, Professor Renn Holness, has been selected by the Canadian Neurosurgical Society (CNSS) to receive The Charles Drake Medal, its Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his outstanding career and significant contribution to Neurosurgery. 

Professor Holness will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual Congress of the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation Congress in Quebec City, June 21 – 24, 2016. The President of the CNSS, Ian Fleetwood, in communicating this signal honour to him referred to Holness’ many leadership roles in Canadian Neurosurgery.

Region’s first Net Zero Energy Building to be constructed at The UWI

Cconstruction of the Caribbean’s first Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) is to commence shortly at The University of the West Indies (UWI). 
 
Ground was broken yesterday (May 10) for the approximately J$61.48 million (US$500,000) project, which will be situated along Gibraltar Way on the Mona campus. It is intended to serve as a prototype for the construction of similar structures in the region.
 
The project is being implemented by UWI’s Institute for Sustainable Development, with technical assistance from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility.
  

Celebrating 50 years of Geography at UWI and in the Caribbean region

Week of conference activities, Mona campus, June 27th to July 1st, 2016
 
The first cohort of geography undergraduates entered UWI Mona in October 1965, and the Department of Geography & Geology and the Jamaican Geographical Society are celebrating this milestone with a week of activities. Alumni from Jamaica, the wider Caribbean region, and elsewhere are invited to join former lecturers, current staff and students to celebrate geography's special contribution to the regional nature of our University and to the professional development of its Caribbean alumni. The week will provide an opportunity for reunion for many classes and associates of the Department as well as networking.
 

UWI Team Placed First in the “Communicating Chemistry: Caribbean Cuisine" International Competition

The Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) hosted a unique student competition: “Communicating Chemistry: Caribbean Cuisine (C4),” at the 251st ACS National Meeting & Exposition in San Diego, CA; where a team comprising four students from The University of the West Indies Mona Campus placed first. Participating students from the Department of Chemistry were Rajeve Brooks, Nadine Whyte, Mario Christie and Shorna Smith.

MSBM wins award for "Best Disaster Risk Management new academic offering " at International Disaster Risk Management in Business Education Workshop

Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) won the award for the best whitepaper featuring disaster risk management as a new academic offering at a workshop held at the Shulich Business School, York University in Toronto Canada, March 23-24, 2016. .  MSBM's submission titled: "Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Management Education” was co-authored by Dr Indianna Minto-Coy and Dr Lila Rao-Graham. The paper will be published as part of the proceedings from the event as well as a book chapter in a forthcoming publication from Emerald Publishing.
