UWI Launches Giving Campaign: Educate and Emancipate

Increasing global economic challenges are not only impacting businesses, but non-profit institutions alike. Wading these challenges means that higher education institutions in the non-profit sector must seek new fundraising strategies. On Friday April 8, 2016, the Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, will launch the first UWI Global Giving Week at The University’s Regional Headquarters in Mona, Jamaica. Other launches will follow at the other physical campuses in Cave Hill, Barbados, and St Augustine, Trinidad. 

UWI MONA ROBOTICS TEAM EXCELS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

A team of Level 2 electronics engineers, electronics and computer science students from the Faculty of Science & Technology at The UWI, Mona placed 3rd in the IEEE international Robotics competition held Saturday, April 2 in Virginia USA. They competed against 46 universities within southeast USA.

Team members were: Yekini Wallen-Bryan – team captain; Paulo Williams, Richard Harris, Aisha Robinson, Khalid Sharpe, Sean McBean, Jason Brown, Locksley Murray, Kriston Kong and Dane Miller. Mr. Lindon Falconer was the Lecturer/team advisor.

New Executive Director for UWI’s International Consulting Company

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Lisa Cummins to the post of Executive Director of The UWI Consulting Company (UWIC) effective March 1, 2016.

IAEA DIRECTOR GENERAL TO DELIVER PUBLIC LECTURE APRIL 4

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), His Excellency Yukiya Amano will make an official visit to Jamaica on Monday, April 4, 2016. As part of the visit, Mr. Amano will be a special guest on The UWI, Mona Campus where he will tour the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) meet with students who are pursuing the Medical Physics degree programme offered by the Department of Physics, and pay a courtesy call on Mona Campus Principal, Prof Archibald McDonald. 

UWI Tackles Caribbean Emergency Response to Zika and Beyond

 Experts agree that the region needs better infrastructure and stronger health systems. Caribbean countries are not equipped to respond to the region’s next public health emergency, and must take urgent steps to coordinate national and regional emergency response strategies. That was the consensus among international experts and senior regional officials from across the Caribbean who met in Bridgetown, Barbados on March 4-5 for a Zika Symposium to discuss implementing a harmonised regional response to the Zika virus.  

HALDEN MORRIS PROMOTED TO RANK OF PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, Faculty of Humanities & Education, Dr. Halden Morris, to the rank of Professor, effective September 23, 2015. 

Dr. Morris holds a diploma in Technical Education from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, the Bachelor of Science (BSc), Hons, in Electrical Technology (1981), the Master of Science (MSc) in Technical Education (Electrical) (1982), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Occupational Education (1986)   from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA.

GARTH LIPPS PROMOTED TO RANK OF PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer in the Psychology Unit of the Department of Sociology, Psychology & Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences to the rank of Professor.

Garth Lipps holds the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Psychology from Simon Fraser University (1984), the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from the University of New Brunswick (1986) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Applied Social Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan, (1994) in Canada.

Jessica Byron-Reid Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government, Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Jessica Byron-Reid to the rank of Professor.

Jessica Byron completed a BA in French and Spanish at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, followed by a postgraduate Diploma in International Relations from The UWI, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad & Tobago. She went on to complete her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Political Science (International Relations) at the University of Geneva, Switzerland.

DANIEL COORE PROMOTED TO THE RANK OF PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing, Faculty of Science & Technology, Dr. Daniel Coore, to the rank of Professor.

Dr. Coore holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering, the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as well as the Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He joined the staff of The UWI, Mona in 1999 as Lecturer in the then Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2006. He served in several key positions in the department including being Head of Department

New Institute of Information Technology Established from UWI-China Partnership

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce that its collaboration with the Global Institute of Software Technology (GIST) in Suzhou, China has produced a UWI-China Institute of Science and Technology which will open later this year. While the establishment of relationship between The UWI and GIST, and feasibility studies of the initiative began early in 2015, the Memorandum of Agreement confirming the Institute was signed at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados on February 19, 2016. The Institute is expected to open with its first cohort of students reading towards a bachelor’s degree in Science and Technology at The UWI, Cave Hill in September 2016.
