Prof. Noureddine Benkeblia named to IUCN Commission

Professor of Crop Science in the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science & Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Dr. Noureddine Benkeblia has been named a Full Member of the International Union of Conservation of Nature, (IUCN)  Commission on Ecosystem Management.
 
The Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) is one of IUCN’s six scientific Commissions. CEM is a network of volunteer experts, numbering approximately 800, from around the world working on ecosystem management related issues, for example climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, Red List of Ecosystems, fisheries and ecosystem restoration and services.

President of the Caribbean Court of Justice to Give Public Lecture at The UWI Mona

Sir  Dennis Byron, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), will deliver a public lecture at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Sir Dennis’ lecture is the second in the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) Distinguished Lecture Series. 
 
Sir Dennis will address the role of the CCJ and its importance to legal, judicial and economic development in the Caribbean. The event will be attended by more than 100 guests including judges, lawyers, law students, media managers, members of the UWI community and officials from the ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs.
 

Homecoming Celebrations 2013

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus celebrates the founding of the University 65 years ago, with its annual Homecoming celebrations this week.
 
The week of celebrations started on Sunday, February 10 with Commemoration Service at the University Chapel.  Students lit candles for their respective nations and the male voice choir ministered.
 
The Homecoming celebration continues on Thursday, February 14 beginning at 2.30 p.m. with the University Parade followed by the Flag raising ceremony at 4.00 p.m.  The celebrations end on Friday, February 15 with Caribbean Day.
 

UWI Research Days to Highlight Approaches to Regional Development

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona puts the spotlight on Regional development at its annual Research Days Exposition, scheduled for Thursday, February 7 and Friday, February 8 on the Mona Ccampus. Under the theme, ‘Pathways and Opportunities for Regional Development’, Research Days 2013 will highlight various ways in which the University is using its diverse research efforts to identify innovative solutions to major developmental challenges.

 

Professor W. Andy Knight appointed Director, UWI Institute of International Relations

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of the internationally renowned scholar of global governance, Professor W. Andy Knight, as Director of the Institute of International Relations (IIR) based at the UWI St Augustine Campus in Trinidad. A Barbadian by birth, Professor Knight has had a distinguished career as an academic and scholar in Canada, culminating in his heading the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta. 
 

Appointment of Pro Vice-Chancellor, Undergraduate Studies

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Alan Cobley as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies with effect from February 1, 2013, succeeding Professor Alvin Wint who had served in the position for two outstanding three-year terms. 
 
Professor Cobley joined the staff of the UWI at the Cave Hill Campus in 1987 as Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and rose quickly through the academic ranks, having been awarded tenure in 1991, been promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1995 and to a Professorship of South African and Comparative History, in 2002.
 

UWI, Mona Repeats Success at Pan American Chess Champs

The University of the West Indies, Mona successfully equaled their previous score of 2.5 points at the recently concluded Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships held in Newark, New Jersey. The UWI, Mona Team was represented by Miguel Asher, Paul Brooks, Zachary Ramsay and Stuart James. The tournament took place at Princeton University and featured over twenty-five colleges and universities in the region, including eighteen Grand Masters. 
 

UWI Press Celebrates 20 years of Publishing Caribbean Books

Founded in 1992, The University of the West Indies Press celebrated 20 years of publishing Caribbean scholarship in October 2012. To honour the contribution of all its stakeholders and authors to its publishing programme, the Press will hold its Twentieth Anniversary and Author Awards Ceremony in Jamaica on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at The University of the West Indies, Regional Headquarters.
