CB Group UWI 5K Run/ Walk to Raise Funds for Sports Development and Scholarships

The University of the West Indies Mona Campus, will host its inaugural UWI 5K Walk/Run on November 18, 2012 starting at 7:00 am. The event is an outcome and the largest legacy of Grand Jamaica Homecoming 2012, will leave.  According to President of Jamaica Homecoming Canada, Donette Chin-Loy Chang, “this historic UWI5K forms part of the ‘gift’ that we in Canada, have sent for Jamaica, in keeping with our legacy of giving forward to education.”
 
The UWI 5K will assist in raising funds for sports development and student scholarships and bursaries and will benefit students at The University of the West Indies, Mona.
 

Paul Simmonds Appointed Executive Director of Mona School of Business & Management

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Paul G. Simmonds as Executive Director of the newly created Mona School of Business and Management, (MSBM) with effect from September 1, 2012.
 
 
The Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) is the merger of the Mona School of Business (MSB) and the Department of Management Studies (DOMS) to form a single business school in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The new entity will benefit from the strong brand entity of the former MSB in the business community, as well as from DOMS’ reputation for innovative research and contribution to social and economic policy. The new MSBM will be formally launched on Monday, September 24, 2012.
 

UWI’s Medical Programme Receives Accreditation

The University of the West Indies continues to lead the way with successful accreditation of its programmes. The Caribbean Accreditation Authority in Medicine and the Health Professions (CAAM-HP) recently accredited UWI’s MBBS degree programme for the period 2012-2017. UWI’s is the first Medical programme in CAAM-HP’s history to achieve accreditation for a five-year period.
 

UWI’s Strategic Plan 2012 – 2017

In September 2011, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor E. Nigel Harris, The University of the West Indies officially began developing its fourth five-year Strategic Plan. Over the past year, The University Office of Planning and Development, headed by Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Andrew Downes, has done an admirable job coordinating the process and is now pleased to publish, during what Professor Harris terms a ‘pivotal’ moment due to a bevy of competitive challenges, The University of the West Indies’ Strategic Plan 2012 – 2017. 

Marcus Garvey’s Son Delivers Lecture at UWI,Mona

Dr. Julius Garvey, the son of national hero, Marcus Garvey will deliver a lecture entitled, “The Relevance of Garveyism in Jamaica Today: Fifty Years After Political Independence.” The event is slated for Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is a part of the 125th Garvey Anniversary (Earthday) celebrations in Jamaica set for August 17-19. 
 
The Lecture will explore the relevance of Garvey’s teachings of African Identity, Black Pride, Black Economic Independence, Black Self Reliance and Black Unity in the Jamaican society.
 

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Inducted into UWI, Mona Honour Park

Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago became the first female Prime Minister to be inducted into the UWI, Mona Park in Honour of Graduates who are or have been Heads of Government on August 7 during an official Induction Ceremony.
 

UWI, Mona, Hansle Parchment Medals in the 110M Hurdles Finals

UWI, Mona, Hansle Parchment secured the bronze medal during the Finals of the men’s 110m hurdles clocking 13.12 seconds today, August 8, 2012 at 3:15 pm (JA time). The University community congratulates him on this significant accomplishment. 
 
Parchment is the first UWI, Mona student to have medaled at the Olympics Games and the first Jamaican to have medaled in the 110M hurdles. 

UWI, Mona Athlete, Parchment Qualifies for 110m Hurdles Semis at Olympics

Twenty-two year old UWI, Mona student Hansle Parchment today (August 7) qualified for the semi -finals of the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.32 seconds.
 
He finished second in Heat 3 behind Cuba’s Orlando Ortega who clocked 13.26 seconds. The semi-finals will be run tomorrow (August 8) at 1:15pm (JA time) and the finals at 3:15pm (JA time).

UWI Mona Student, Parchment Featured at London 2012 Olympics

UWI, Mona student, Hansle Parchment will be featured at the 2012 London Olympics representing Jamaica in the 110 M Hurdles on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 4:10am (local time). Parchment, who won his event at the Jamaica Athletics Administration Association (JAAA) National Trials qualifying with a personal best of 13.18 seconds to meet the Olympics 'A' standard, is a final year Bachelors of Science in Psychology student. 
 

Psychiatric Association Conference 2012 Explores Sex and the Society

“Sex and the Society” is the topic for discussion at the annual Jamaica Psychiatric Association Conference slated for Sunday, August 12, 2012 starting at 8 am at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge and Conference Centre. The main address will be delivered by Dr. Jaswant Guzder, McGill University on the topic, Attachment, Identity and Sexuality: Influences in a Post-Colonial Context. 
 
The Conference will address a range of issues including: Paraphilias: “Flashing” and “Peeping” in Jamaica, Sexual Dysfunction, Sexual Offences, Paedophilia and Sex and Drugs. CME credits provided.
