SALISES Conference to Score Post Independence Years

Reflections on the past fifty years since Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago gained independence, and possible directions for the next fifty, will be explored when The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), University of the West Indies, Mona, hosts a five-day conference at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, August 20-24, 2012.
 

UWI , Mona and Executive Motors Hosted Guidance Counsellors Seminar

The Office of Career and Placement Services at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona and Executive Motors hosted a two-day seminar for 39 guidance counsellors from across Jamaica recently. 
 
The seminar was born out of a need to better educate counsellors and students on the value of career information. According to Placement and Career Services Manager, Mrs. Merrit Henry, a 2008 study suggested that guidance counsellors were not aware of many of the career offerings at UWI, nor the entry requirements for these programmes. 
 

UWI and Regional Gender and Development Experts Meet

As part of its on-going commitment to capacity building in the region, the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (Regional Coordinating Unit) at UWI will host a team of gender and development specialists from UN Women and Université Quisquéya of Haiti from July 1-4, 2012 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
 

Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Team Announced

The Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Organising Committee has announced the local team to the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Regional Mathematical Olympiad, which will take place from June 15 to 23 in San Salvador, El Salvador.
 
They are Zale Young (captain), Campion College; Romain Jones, Campion College; Anphernee Wilson, Herbert Morrison Technical High School; Martin McIntosh, Cornwall College; and Tchakamau Ra, Immaculate Conception High School. 
 

UWI Professor Appointed Chair of UN Working Group of Experts

 
Professor Verene A. Shepherd, University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI) is the newly appointed Chairperson of the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGPAD). 
 
The announcement of her appointment came at the recently concluded 11th Annual Meeting of the Working Group in Geneva, Switzerland. 
 

New Faculties and Departments at The UWI

Effective August 2012, the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences at the Mona and Cave Hill Campuses of The University of the West Indies, in Jamaica and Barbados respectively,  will be renamed the Faculty of Science and Technology. The decision was taken at the annual business meeting of the Council of The University of the West Indies, held recently at the Mona Campus. The new Faculty will have a heavy focus on technology, particularly information communication technologies (ICT).

Language Education Expert to Deliver Inaugural Professorial Lecture

Newly appointed professor in the School of Education at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona, Dr. Beverley Bryan will deliver her inaugural professorial lecture with the theme “English is an Arena not a Subject”: Language Teaching and Learning in Post-Independence Jamaica” on Thursday, May 03, 2012 in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) at The UWI, Mona Campus, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Interested persons are invited to attend.
 

Top Caribbean Players to Participate in UWI, Mona Inaugural Beach Volleyball Invitational

Top players including national players from Jamaica and Cayman Islands will be among the line up at the inaugural UWI, Mona Beach Volleyball Invitational. Among the players who will participate are:  Jamaican duos of Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley and Tsahai Williams and Nardrake Hutchinson, former Ms. Cayman, Cristin Alexander will represent her country alongside, Jennifer Bily. On the male side, Jamaican Ryck Webb and Gatashu Bonner are also expected to put on a grand show at the Invitational. The event is set for on April 21-22, 2012 starting at 8:30 am daily at the renovated UWI Sands at the Mona Bowl. 
 

16th Annual Derek Gordon Seminar

“Crime and Social Theory in the Caribbean” is the theme of this year’s annual Derek Gordon seminar scheduled for Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 2 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI.
