UWI, Mona Final Year Students Host Forum for Males

Six final year students, at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) UWI, Mona  will host a forum dubbed, UWIman:Mona ‘Mek Wi Reason’ Sex Talk debate and discussion.  The event is set for Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 1-3 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.

UWIman:Mona ‘Mek Wi Reason’ Sex Talk is designed to provide males students at UWI Mona Campus with an avenue to talk about issues affecting them in a frank and informed  forum. The initiative seeks to address the growing concern of male marginalization on the campus with specific reference to education and issues pertaining to sexuality. The Project is a part of the Communication Analysis and Planning (CAP) course done by final year CARIMAC students.

The UWIman:Mona project has partnered with Dr.  Peter Weller’s regional Caribbean Male Action Network (CariMAN) project which aims to bring together men and organizations throughout the Caribbean engaged in work with and for men. It is hoped that the initiative will trigger positive change on the UWI Mona campus and eventually the wider community and Caribbean.

The “Sex Talk” debate will be lead by members of the UWI Mona debating community.

The event will be chaired by actor, teacher, writer and co-author of the training manual “Men and Their Families” Owen “Blakka” Ellis and winner of the Public Speaking Competition at the 2011 World Universities Debating Championships, Krystal Tomlinson.  Entertainment will be provided by renowned dub poet and actor Randy McLaren.

The group also recently launched the UWIman:Mona ‘Mek Wi Reason’ Facebook page which features interactive discussions on trending issues as well as competitions and prize give-aways.
