“Chappie” Closes March is Movie Month Series

The final Movie Month activity, on March 30 will feature a documentary film with Cinematographer and Lecturer, Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), Franklyn St. Juste. Mr. St. Juste has directed a number of award winning documentaries and has also worked on feature films such as The Harder They Come.  The presentation is entitled, “Originations and Reflections on the Search for A Caribbean Aesthetic.” The event is set for 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. 
 

No Smoking Day at UWI, Mona

The UWI, Mona Wellness Committee has designated Thursday, March 29, 2012 as “No Smoking Day.  The Day will feature a booth display at the UWI Health Centre Carpark from 1 pm to 5 pm. 
 
The university community is invited to visit the display. 
 
 The event is designed to educate and inform the university community of the effects of cigarette smoking on the heart, cardiovascular system and oral health.

Annual Elsa Goveia Lecture Explores the Education Landscape in the Greater Antilles

The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona hosts the 28th annual Elsa Goveia Lecture entitled, The Education Landscapes of the Greater Antilles in Historical Perspectives”. The Lecture takes place on Tuesday, March 27 at 5:30 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.  Carl Campbell, Professor Emeritus in the Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona will deliver the Lecture. 
 

SALISES Fifty- Fifty Seminar Examines the EU and Overseas Countries Relationship

 “The EU and Overseas Countries and Territories: The Search for a New Relationship” is the title of the seminar set to take place at the SALISES, Conference Room 1 on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 3 p.m. The address will be made by Professor Paul Sutton, retired Senior Professor in Caribbean Studies at the Caribbean Studies Centre of London Metropolitan University. 
 

Faculty of Pure and Applied Awards Ceremony 2012

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at The UWI, Mona will recognize over one hundred students for their outstanding academic performance during the annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, March 28 at 5:30 pm at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona.  On this occasion, academic staff from the Faculty will also be highlighted for their outstanding teaching, research and other noteworthy contribution.
 
Mr. Raymond Pryce, Member of Parliament will be the keynote speaker.

“Tourism for Development: Illusion or Solution” is the title of the Symposium being hosted by the Centre for Tourism and Policy Research (CTPR) at The UWI, Mona on March 29, 2012 at 6 pm at Lecture Room 3, Faculty of Law, UWI, Mona. UWI, Mona Research Symposium Examines Small Firms that have Gone Public

The Department of Management Studies, The UWI, Mona hosts a Research Symposium entitled, “Managing Small Firms That Have Gone Public” on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 8 am at the Council Room, UWI, Mona. Professor Shawn Carraher, Hodson Endowed Chair, Indiana Wesleyan University will deliver the keynote address. 
 
The Symposium will also see presentations from: Dr. William Lawrence, Director, Professional Services Unit at MSB, UWI, Mrs. Michelle Chong, CEO, Honey Bun Jamaica and Mr. Robin Levy, Deputy General Manager, Jamaica Stock Exchange.

Esther Figueroa to Speak on Activist Filmmaking on March 23

Activist, independent filmmaker, Dr. Esther Figueroa, will be the featured presenter for the Friday, March 23 session of the “March is Movie Month at Mona” series. Dr. Figueroa’s talk, “Counter-Narratives: Activist Filmmaking and the Political Process” will begin at 6:00pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.  
 

Carbon Markets Workshop

The Department of Physics, UWI, Mona and the Caribbean Electric Utility Service Corporation (CARILEC) partner to host a workshop on Carbon Markets. The Workshop is scheduled for March 21-23 starting at 8:30 am daily at UWI, Mona. Claudia Raimundo, Senior Consultant at IT Power Limited will be the main presenter.
 
The Workshop will address a range of issues on Carbon Markets such as the Kyoto Protocol, Clean Development Mechanism and Its Application for the Caribbean, Carbon Market Theory and Other carbon Market Schemes. It is targeted at government agencies especially those in the Energy and Environment Industries, electric utility providers, and universities.

Modern Languages Day 2012

“Many Languages-One Message: Let’s Cross It” is the theme of the Modern Languages Day and International Food Fair on Thursday, March 29. The Day’s activities begin at 12 noon with a Food Fair and Films and Music Session. A Concert follows at 2 pm in Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). 
 
During an Handing Over Ceremony at 6 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, Her Excellency Celsa Nuño, Spanish Ambassador will present books and other educational resources to the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
