MPhil/ PhD is primarily a research degree and shall be awarded primarily on the basis of examination by thesis.
Candidates should normally have either a BSc Mathematics degree from a recognized university with at least Upper Second Class Honours, or have successfully completed a MSc Mathematics from a recognized university.
Candidates should normally have a MPhil Mathematics, or an MSc Mathematics with a research component that makes up at least 25% of the programme credits.
In each case candidates should identify a supervisor and develop a research proposal as part of the application.
For the 2014/15 academic year (normally the same as the UGC funded course i.e. it is subsidized by the Jamaican Government) Departmental Awards may be given to students who obtained a GPA of 3.0 and above where tuition is waived and a stipend is given annually. UWI Scholarships can also be given to students with GPA of 3.6 or above by applying to the Office of Graduate Studies & Research.
