The TPM Programme, provides opportunities for research and taught courses at the Certificate, Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral levels. It also offers industry and academic seminars as well as consultancy services in Telecoms, IT and Broadcasting.

The Programme undertakes sponsored research projects in these and other technology-linked disciplines.  Taught courses in the Programme began with a specialized course in Strategic Planning and Policy, designed for persons in the public and private sectors who were already working in Telecommunications, Broadcasting Regulation and IT.

Current Programmes 


Master of Science in Telecommunications Policy and Technology Management (MSc TPM) 


TPM will move to another level when it launches its new Master of Science Degree in Telecommunications Policy and Technology Management in 2008. This M.Sc. Programme specifically seeks to meet the demand for advanced training for telecommunications executives and technical specialists in the specialized areas of Policy, Technology and Management. Graduates will gain specialized knowledge for higher-level positions in public and private sector organizations or be motivated to establish their own businesses.

Research and Consultancy Services


Since 2005 the TPM Programme has worked on several projects aimed at developing the ICT and Telecommunications sector in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Among the projects the team is working on are:


Mobile Opportunities: Poverty and Telephone Access in Latin America and the Caribbean

The main purpose of this project is to understand the strategies used by the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean to access and use the mobile telephone service and to identify the main regulation and market barriers for the growth of its penetration and usage. TPM participates in this project as part of the Regional Dialogue on the Information Society (DIRSI).


 


Building Local Capacity for ICT Policy and Regulatory Research, Training, Expert Assistance and Advocacy in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific: A Needs Assessment and Gap Analysis.


The TPM Programme is working with LIRNE.NET to assess the needs of the ICT sector in regions of the global south. This initiative is funded by Infodev.


 The following research projects have been completed by the TPM Programme:


E-Powering Jamaica: National ICT Strategic Plan 2007-2012

MSB Lecturers Dr. Hopeton Dunn and Prof. Evan Duggan acted as consultants for the Central Information Technology Office in the preparation of the National ICT Strategic Plan for next five years.

Telework: New Forms of Work and Employment Opportunities in the Caribbean

Prepared for the International Research Development Centre, this project was jointly led by Dr. Hopeton Dunn of the TPM Programme and Dr. Noel Cowell of the Department of Management Studies, UWI, Mona. This project sought to assess the prospect of telework as a means of transforming labour policies and practice in the region.
