Undergraduate Programmes

Bachelor of Science Nursing, BScN

The UWI School of Nursing, Mona offers undergraduate and graduate nursing programmes to a nationally and regionally diverse student body. Our undergraduate nursing programme has both a (pre/RN) programme and a registered nurse completion programme BScN (post RN). Upon completion of either programme, a Bachelor of Science (BScN) degree in Nursing is granted.

The UWI Mona Campus, Western Jamaica Campus and in collaboration with Tertiary Level Institutions

  • Brown’s Town Community College (BTCC)
  • Excelsior Community College (EXED)
  • Knox Community College (KCC)

    The professional practice of nursing at a beginner’s level is the objective of the BScN  programme. It is designed to inculcate interpersonal effectiveness, attitudes, ethical concepts, critical thinking, clinical judgment, and decision-making as a basis for evidence based nursing care consistent with best practices in the 21st century.
Application forms are available at the UWI Admissions Office and at any of the other campuses. Completed applications with the requirements stated are to be submitted the Senior Assistant Registrar, Admissions Office, The University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica

General Application Information

This programme of theory and clinical practice is offered in 6 semesters and 3 summers. Successful applicants are prepared for a professional career in nursing.

Candidates must be 17 years of age or over at the beginning of the academic year of entry - in August.

Satisfy the university requirements for normal matriculation
or
Satisfy the university requirements for lower level matriculation
or
Have successfully completed 1st semester /year courses in any tertiary level institution recognised for credits by the university of the West Indies
or
Hold qualifications from a tertiary level institution recognised by the university of the West Indies
and

Applicants’ academic qualifications must include the following subjects/levels:

English language or Communications (CAPE)

Mathematics or Pure Mathematics (CAPE) or Applied Mathematics (CAPE)

One subject from: Biology, Human & Social Biology, Integrated Science, or Biology (CAPE)

Two or more subjects from:: Agricultural Science (double/single), Geography, Caribbean History, French or a Modern Languages, Spanish or Modern Languages, Social Studies or Caribbean Studies or Sociology, Religious Education, Food & Nutrition, Home Economics Management, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Englsih Literature or Literature in English, Business Studies Information Technology (General/Technical) or or Computer Science or Computer Studies, Physics and Chemistry.


Applicants with 2 or more subjects at CXC/CSEC General 3 or at GCE level C or a combination of both will not be considered entry to the programme.



Persons age 21 years and over who do not otherwise satisfy the set academic requirements may submit full details of their academic and professional attainments and overall experience.

Candidates successfully completing this BScN programme will be eligible to apply to the Nursing Council of Jamaica for the designation Registered General Nurse (RGN)

Each Applicant must pass the Regional Examination for Nurses Registration(RENR) in order to be entered on the register for general nurses in Jamaica, use the designation ‘Registered General Nurse’ (RGN) and be eligible to practice as a RGN in Jamaica or any CARICOM country.
