RATIONALE: To, in a structured manner, continue to undertake the production of rounded citizens and enlightened leaders through meaningful and relevant co-curricular programmes in cricket. This is to be done under the aegis of the OSS.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the programme students should be able to:

  1. Explain the basic methods of coaching techniques
  2. Explain the methods of preparing a pitch
  3. Plan a training session
  4. Discuss cricket Literature and statistics
  5. Demonstrate good deportment, attitude/sportsmanship
  6. Explain the rules of the game (including fielding positions)

CONTENT:

i. Ground and pitch preparation,
ii. Knowledge and care of equipment and gear,
iii. Umpiring,
iv. Scoring,
v. Introduction to coaching,
vi. Cricket literature and statistics,
vii. Batting techniques
viii. Fielding techniques
ix. Bowling techniques
x. Preparing for: national, regional, and international competitions
xi. How to plan a training session
xii. Rules of cricket

PERIOD OF DELIVERY:

With the exception of (3a), all other activities will be conducted in Semester 2. One afternoon/evening (Thursday) would be devoted to covering the items in the course outline. The duration of the presentations will be determined by the presenter(s) with options to repeat, if deemed necessary.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT:

Assessment of performance by coach and coordinator
using specified criteria.

Journal (Records of skills and information acquired in training and
evaluation of games

Multiple choice test 10%
Successful completion of umpires/scoring course 30%

NB.
- Students must pass all sections of the course to be awarded the three credits.
- The umpires/scoring course will be organized by the co-ordinator in association with the CBC.
- The student must register at the beginning of semester I as a candidate for credits
- Students must attend at least 75% of the training sessions, seminars and workshop
- Second-marking will be done by other members of staff with expertise in the sport or by external persons to be assigned by the Student Services Manager Sports.
