Netball
RATIONALE: To encourage and develop an interest in netball among the students and to produce officials and administrators in this game, not only for Jamaica but for the region.
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the programme students should be able to:
1. Explain the rules of the game
2. Discuss the duties and responsibilities of the officials
3. Plan a training session
4. Explain and evaluate the various tactics used in netball
CONTENT:
1. Rules of the Game
2. Officiating - Umpiring, Scoring, timekeeping.
3. Format for Daily Training Programme
a. Warm up (2 types)
General Warm up – preparation of body for exercise, stretching rotations.
Specific warm up – for skill rehearsal agility, flexibility mobility.
b. Work out – a combination of fitness and skill training.
c. Warm down – to prevent blood collecting in the limbs. Use gentle rhythmic movements such as walking or easy jogging.
4. Analysis of tactics
a. Attacking Tactics
Full court – straight line, zig zag (2 formation)
Assess the merits of each and evaluate the use of each in specific situations.
b. Tactics around and in goal circle
i. marking off of space by blocking defenders
ii. use of lob pass for tall shooters
iii. movement of shooters inside goal circle
iv. positioning of C and WA around goal circle
v. swinging ball across the circlec. Defending Tactics
i. Man to man defence – each defender mark one attacker.
ii. Double defence - a combination defence where two defending players concentrate their defence skills on one attacking player.
iii. Zone defence – this is where the team tries to defend an area.
iv. Evaluation of the above tactics and discussion of when and how best to use each.

The delivery of the programme will be done by the OSS through the Sports Department. A Coordinator will be assigned to the programme. He/she will be assisted by a coach and other persons who will be invited to make presentations on different aspects of the programme.
NB: The student must register at the beginning of the semester as a candidate for credits.
The coordinator in association with the JAAA will organize the officiating course.
Students must pass all sections of the course to be awarded the three credits.
Second marking will be done by members of staff with expertise in the sport or by external persons contracted by the Student Services Manager Sports.
Students must attend at least 75% 0f the seminars, workshops and training sessions, track meets.
