Dr Patrícia Nicolucci is a physicist with clinical training in Radiation Therapy and a certified Radiological Protection Supervisor by National Nuclear Energy Commission from Brazil. She is a professor in the undergraduate program in Medical Physics and in the graduate program in Physics Applied in Medicine and Biology from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she also advises master and doctoral students.

The primary research area from Dr Patrícia are: Physics applied to Radiotherapy and Dosimetry, with special focus on reference dosimetry, in vivo dosimetry, treatment protocols and Monte Carlo applications.

Abstract

The University of São Paulo is a pioneer in Medical Physics research and education in Latin America. The Physics Department at Ribeirão Preto holds a graduate program in Medical Physics since 1986 and the first undergraduate program in Medical Physics in Brazil since 2000. Also, a 2-years clinical training program in Radiological Physics is held by the University Hospital since 1982.
The undergraduate Medical Physics program receives 40 new students every year offering a strong Physics core disciplines along with interdisciplinary, applied and professional disciplines for a total of 5 years.  An obligatory field training of 300 hours minimum has to be attended by all the students. As the great majority of the students are interested in clinical areas, the University Hospital, located inside the campus, offers clinical training in Radiation Therapy, Diagnostic Radiology, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Ultra sound and Radiological Protection. By the end of 2011 more than 150 Medical Physicists have been graduated at USP.

The graduate program in Medical Physics receives an average of 10 students every semester for the masters and the doctoral programs. The main research fields are Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic radiology, Biological Signal Processing, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Biomagnetism, Biosensors and biomaterials and Photobiophysics. A total of 32 credits in disciplines for the master program and 42 credits in disciplines for the doctoral program have to be completed by the students before they can present their masters or doctoral thesis. The clinical and experimental part of the research projects are performed at the University Hospital. The interaction between the Physics Department and The University Hospital is paramount both in developing the research projects of the Department students and for building up the capacity of the human resources at the Hospital. The graduate program has formed more than 230 masters and 95 doctors in Physics Applied in Medicine and Biology.

The clinical training program in Physics Applied to Radiology at the University Hospital receives physicists and medical physicists only for a 2-years course of training. The areas offered are Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Therapy. A total of 3800 hours is divided in up to 760 hours of seminars and 3040 hours of field training. The legal obligation for services of radiotherapy in Brazil to have a certified physicist or medical physicist makes it one of the most promising areas for students. More than 60 students have taken the clinical training at the University Hospital until 2011.
