WORKSHOPS 

  1. Climate Studies Group

  2. Prof. A. Anthony Chen and Dr. T. Stephenson participated in a panel discussion on Climate Change and its implication for Caribbean States, hosted by the UWI United Nations Club on November 19, 2009. Participants included teachers and students from secondary schools.

    The Climate Studies Group Mona, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, hosted a Vulnerability and Adaptation Workshop in St. Vincent on November 23-24, 2009.  Members of the CSGM team included Prof. A. Anthony Chen, Drs. Michael Taylor and Tannecia Stephenson and Ms. Kimberly Stephenson.

  3. United Nations Environment Programme Caribbean Environmental Programme (UNEP CEP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

    The Department hosted the second day of a 3-day Workshop entitled: “International waters in the Wider Caribbean”. The workshop was convened by the United Nations Environment Programme Caribbean Environmental Programme (UNEP CEP) and the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP). The workshop ran from November 18-20 2009.


  4. Dr. Paul Aiken

    Dr. Aiken attended an Engineering Accreditation Workshop in Puerto Rico, on November 26 -29, 2009, at which the Roles and Responsibilities of the Caribbean Accreditation Committee for Engineering and Technology (CACET), were discussed.

  5. Dr. Claude McNamarah and Miss Darlene Field

    Dr. C. McNamarah and Miss D. Field attended a workshop conducted by the International Network of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, entitled: "Barriers, Drivers and Unused Potentials Related to Sustainable Energy Systems", which was sponsored by the German Academic exchange Service (DAAD).  The workshop ran from November 29, to December 5, 2009.

IAEA PROJECT -- Dr. Mitko Voutchkov

The Department entertained two sets of visitors from the Inter Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In November three experts met with relevant members of the Department.  Discussions centred on the potential role of the University and Physics in the GOJ's Country Programming Framework and possible mid-term priority nuclear-related projects to be supported by the IAEA.

In December, IAEA Expert Mr. Andreas Karydas visited the Department to discuss the procurement of equipment x-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy equipment under the IAEA-project JAM0004 “Development of National Capacity for Applications of Nuclear Science in Jamaica. Discussion were also held re fellowships, training and expert visits for the 2010 ”.

GRANTS  -- Darlene Field

Darlene Field was successful in securing a Grant of US$1,535.50 from the Postgraduate Research Fund, to acquire needed equipment for the project: "The evaluation of various PV technologies under location conditions".
