Dr. Tannecia Stephenson  

Dr. Tannecia Stephenson has been appointed the Non-Professorial Academic Board Representative from the Faculty of Science and Technology for the 2014/2015 Academic Year.

PHD AWARDED

Mr. Maurice Miller , PhD Student in the Department of Physics, had the Oral Defence for his PhD, on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Studio I, Open Campus.  The title of Mr. Miller’s thesis was "Gamma Spectrometry Methods and Analysis of Primordial Radionuclides and Caesium – 137 in the Jamaican Soil Environment”.  On September 16, 2014, Mr. Miller was awarded his PhD Degree.

GRANTS / FUNDING

Dr. K. Edward received a Grant of US$5,000.00, from the Caribbean Climate Innovation Center (CCIC), a Project of the World Bank and its global entrepreneurship program infoDev.   Dr. Edward was one of eleven (11) Regional Winners to receive this Grant.   Dr. Edward was also the recipient of a CCIC Proof of Concept Grant valued at US$ 50,000.00.

World Meteorological Organization OPACE 5 on Capacity Development

Dr. Tannecia Stephenson was successfully nominated to the WMO Fifth Open Panel of the Commission for Climatology (CCl) Experts (OPACE 5) on Capacity Development.  Dr. Stephenson will serve on the Task Team on Guide to Climatological Practices (TT-GCP) for a period 2014-2018.

Miss Anna Thomas and Mr. Yekini Wallen-Bryan (Undergraduate AE Majors) Received Scholarships to attend the Latin American Student Energy Summit held in Mexico City from June 19th to 21st, 2014.  The Scholarships were offered to twenty-two (22) students in the Latin American and Caribbean Region after a competitive review process, which included submitting a photograph, essay and video describing themselves and their course of study. They were the only representatives from the UWI at the Summit.

Mr. Andre Gordon Attended a Training Course from July 2 1, 2014 to August 1, 2014 at the  Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe Germany.  The Workshop was sponsored by the IAEA and focused on Marine Radioactivity: Analytical Techniques and Quality Management.

The Alternative Energy Club (UWIMAEC)

  • The Alternative Energy Club (UWIMAEC) participated in (i) Tent City held during the orientation period on August 21st and 22nd of this Year, and (ii) Club Fusion, held on Thursday, September 18th, 2014. Both events were put on by the Office of Student Services and Development.  For the latter event the Club partnered with JPS eSTORE .
  • The Club participated in the Jamaica Environmental Trust’s Beach Cleanup on Sunday, September 21st ,2014 in commemoration of International Coastal Cleanup Day.  The site was at Fort Rocky along the Palisadoes in Kingston. 
  • The Club participated in the Faculty’s “Club Fusion” held on Thursday September 25, 2014.

Denbigh 2014

The Department of Physics participated in the Denbigh Agricultural Show, from August 1 to 3, 2014.  The featured display was the SMART House, and the participants from the Department included Miss N. McLean, Mrs. C. Scarlett, Miss R. Walters, Mr. S. Watson, Mr. L. Henderson, Mr. D. Williams, Mr. D. Davis, Mr. J. Harris, Mr. S. Simms, Dr. A. Coy and Mr. S. Box.
