Newly appointed professor in the School of Education at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona, Dr. Beverley Bryan will deliver her inaugural professorial lecture with the theme “English is an Arena not a Subject”: Language Teaching and Learning in Post-Independence Jamaica” on Thursday, May 03, 2012 in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) at The UWI, Mona Campus, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Interested persons are invited to attend.
Top Caribbean Players to Participate in UWI, Mona Inaugural Beach Volleyball Invitational

Top players including national players from Jamaica and Cayman Islands will be among the line up at the inaugural UWI, Mona Beach Volleyball Invitational. Among the players who will participate are: Jamaican duos of Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley and Tsahai Williams and Nardrake Hutchinson, former Ms. Cayman, Cristin Alexander will represent her country alongside, Jennifer Bily. On the male side, Jamaican Ryck Webb and Gatashu Bonner are also expected to put on a grand show at the Invitational. The event is set for on April 21-22, 2012 starting at 8:30 am daily at the renovated UWI Sands at the Mona Bowl.

UWI Mona Library to Measure Library Service Quality

The UWI Mona Library is one of the recipients of the Association of Research Libraries LibQUAL+® In-Kind Grant for 2012.
LibQUAL+® is a survey developed by the Association of Research Libraries to measure library service quality and identify best practices. The programme’s centrepiece is a rigorously tested Web-based survey paired with training that helps libraries assess and improve library services, change organizational culture, and market the library.
The survey is being introduced to the UWI community and the information gained will provide a better understanding of how well the Library meets the needs of the community and what improvements can be made to serve the population better.

Scientific studies and appraisal of some bush remedies at the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona have found that these “bushes” though possibly having beneficial ingredients also have potential toxins which can be harmful to individuals and that these cultural practices greatly impact on the health of the region.
UWI, Mona Student Takes National Junior Chess Crown

Stuart James captured the 2012 National Junior Chess Championships, which took place recently and featured the eight highest locally rated chess players under the age of 20. James, a second year student at the University of the West Indies, started the event as the favourite based on his recent performance in the John Powell Open in which he defeated and placed ahead of several National Masters to tie for first place.
MSB Team Wins IDS Innovation Grant

A two-member team from the Mona School of Business (MSB) Centre for Excellence at UWI has won a technical Innovation Grant from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) for their proposal for the Agriculture Evidence Research Assistant App. The winning team of Gebre Wallace and Matthew McNaughton was among five teams that won IDS Grants from a total of 70 applicants. The Grants were open to technical staff / application developers who were based in an organization in a developing country, with over 190 countries being eligible.

UWI Mona Completes Successful Pan Am Chess Venture

The UWI, Mona Campus successfully competed at the 2011 Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships, which took place December 26-31 in Dallas, Texas, placing third in the "Best International team" award category.
The Championship featured the best universities and colleges in the region including several Grand and International Masters. UWI, Mona fell short by only a half point in the final round match against the higher seeded University of Texas, having earlier registered impressive wins over Florida Atlantic University, and Arizona State University, and gained a hard fought draw with Texas Tech University.
