Distinguished Lecture

The Department of Medicine, UWI, Mona hosts the annual Professor Eric Cruickshank Distinguished Lecture on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 5 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

The lecture is entitled, “The Genesis and Evolution of Renal Replacement Therapy in the Caribbean” and will be delivered by Professor George Nicholson, Professor Emeritus, Department of Medicine, UWI, Cave Hill.

UWI Plays Tribute to the Late Trevor Rhone

“Two Can Play” an award-winning comedy by the late Trevor Rhone is being staged by the University Players to pay tribute to him with six performances from Saturday October 17 to Sunday October 25 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona. The performance on Sunday, October 18 at 6 pm saw proceeds being donated to the McSyl Basic School in Bellas Gate, to which Mr. Trevor Rhone had committed his support shortly before his passing

Two Can Play, a work which won the award for Best Jamaican Play in 1982, features performances by 2008 Actor Boy Award nominees Nadean Rawlins and Alwyn Scott, and is directed by Brian Heap, who also won this year’s award for Best Director.

Moonbeam Award Goes to UWI Faculty

Michael Holgate, Assistant Staff Tutor at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI Mona, won a Moonbeam Children award for his novel, “Night of the Indigo”. The novel also won a silver award in the young adult - religious/spirituality category.  “Night of the Indigo” is available in local bookstores and online or through Macmillan Caribbean publishers and its distributors.

Minister of Commerce Speaks at Book Launch

The Honorable Karl Samuda, Minister of Commerce will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the book “Understanding Exporting in the Small and Micro Enterprise”. The book is authored by Dr. Densil Williams, Lecturer in the Department of Management Studies, UWI, Mona. The Launch takes place on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 6 pm at the Council Room, UWI, Mona.

Faculty of Medical Sciences Recognizes Outstanding Student Achievers

The Faculty of Medical Sciences hosts its annual Student Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Ceremony will see the recognition of outstanding student performers for the last academic year.

Quality Inquiry in the Caribbean Conference

The School of Education at UWI, Mona presents the Quality Inquiry in the Caribbean Conference on October 30-31, 2009 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre and Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) respectively. The Conference is themed, “Qualitative Research for Caribbean Development and will feature keynote addresses by Professor Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Madison, Professor Frances Stage, New York City University and from UWI, Mona, Professor Aggrey Brown and Professor Barry Chevannes.

UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Lecture and Workshop

The University of the West Indies, Mona and Guardian Life Limited will host the UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Lecture on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. This year’s lecture will be delivered by Dr. Ellen Weber, President of MITA International Brain Center, Rochester, New York. The lecture will explore the topic, “How can brain based research inform teaching?”

The lecture will discuss how today’s digital, fast-paced, media fueled, multitasking, video-game isolating life is changing the way human minds develop, operate, remember , process and apply facts. The event will serve to provide practical techniques for educators to consider in engaging learners and improve learner achievement in the modern age.

“Souls of Black Girls”

 
The Institute for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit has organized a film showing on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The featured film is “Souls of Black Girls.”

Lunch Hour Concert Features Brazilian Music with Patricia Reis

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures partner to host “Bossa Nova in Kingston” on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 1 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre. “Bossa Nova” is a lunch hour concert featuring Brazilian music performed by Patricia Reis backed by a Jamaican band. The event is designed to expose the university community to various cultures.

The show is sponsored by the Embassy of Brazil and is a part of a series of three shows named “Bossa Nova in Kingston”. The first show took place in September at the Bank of Jamaica auditorium.

UWI students and staff are invited to attend. Admission is free.
