UWI, Mona Launches Patwa Book Titled, “Writing Jamaican the Jamaican Way

“Writing Jamaican the Jamaican Way/ Ou Fi Rait Jamiekan” is the title of the first major commercial publication set to be released by the Jamaican Language Unit (JLU) UWI, Mona on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 6 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.
The launch features a combination of digital and live performances, including budding dancehall artiste Nickesha Dawkins a.k.a. Gem Sto:n. She will perform the specially written dancehall song titled, ‘Writing Jamaican the Jamaican Way’. It will be hosted by an animated personality, Emcee Jamtik.
Closing Exercise of Region Course in Community Care of the Elderly

The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, at the University of the West Indies, Mona will host the closing exercise of the seventeenth Regional Course in “Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean” on Tuesday, June 16 at 10.30 a.m. in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Classroom. The guest speaker will be Bishop Gary Welch, Chaplain, Jamaica Constabulary Force.
UWI Joins in Celebrating World Sickle Awareness Day on June 19

The Sickle Cell Unit, Tropical Medicine Research Institute, UWI will celebrate World Sickle Cell Awareness Day on Friday, June 19. Several activities are scheduled to take place at the Unit which is located on the Mona Campus. These activities include: free screening, educational sessions and tours of the facility.
The Day is designed to raise public awareness about sickle cell anaemia and to eliminate harmful prejudices associated with the disease.

The 13th July at UWI Programme is being held this year under the theme “Sustainable Development Preserving the Marine Environment.” This scientific and cultural enrichment programme will be held in two modules. Module 1 takes place from July 20-24 at UWI, Mona and Module 2 from July 27-31 at St. Ann and Montego Bay. The programme will provide stimulation through field trips, planned activities and discussion sessions with experts. “Innovation, Demand and Competitiveness in Telecommunications: Implications for the Caribbean Region and Beyond" is the theme of the inaugural staging of the International Telecommunications Society (ITS) Conference in the Caribbean. The Conference takes place on June 23 -26, 2009 at Rose Hall Resort and Spa, Montego Bay. The Conference commences with an Opening Ceremony on June 23 at 7 pm where the keynote address will be delivered by The Hon Daryl Vaz, Minister of Information and Telecommunications, Jamaica. The Conference is being organized by the Mona School of Business at UWI, Mona and the ITS.

Mona Named Three Time Champions in UWI/FCIB Case Analysis Competition

UWI, Mona Team achieved their third consecutive win in the UWI/ FirstCaribbean International Bank (FCIB) Case Analysis Competition held on June 2, 2009 at Mona. The Competition which began in 2007 as a part of the strategic alliances forged between UWI and the private sector is designed to improve the analytical, oratory and presentation skills of participating tertiary students in business case analysis. For this year the teams' task was to analyse the vehicle used for the merger of Barclay’s Bank and CIBC, the impact on minority shareholders, the consolidation of financial statements, the treatment of goodwill, uniting banking and accounting systems, and the challenges presented by staffing and transitioning.
