Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & EDUCATION (EDUCATION-BASED) (B.Ed.)

                Three Years  (Not Teacher Trained)

(Limited options: History, English Language, Mathematics, Science)

  •  Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) including English Language AND Two two-Unit CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects in relevant area.

      Two Years  (Teacher Trained)

  • Teachers' College Certificate in relevant area  +  4 GCE (A-C)/CXC grades (I-III), including English Language

OR

  • Three year Secondary Teachers’ College Diploma in relevant area + English Language.

 

FACULTY OF HUMANITIES & EDUCATION (HUMANITIES-BASED) (B.A.)

      Three Years            

  • Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level / BGCSE subjects  (Grades A-C) including  English Language.  Strongly recommended: Geography, Foreign language, Mathematics (or a laboratory science subject), History, Literature AND Two two-unit CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects (one of which must be a Humanities subject for which courses are taught at the University).
  • Applicants for the Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management programme must have CXC CSEC/BGCSE Mathematics.
  • For Major in Media and Communication, a pass in the CARIMAC ENTRANCE TEST (taken in February) is also required.

 

FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

M.B.B.S. – Five years

 (applicants must be at least 18 years old in year of admissions)

  • Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Levels/ BGCSE (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  AND
  • Three two-Unit CAPE subjects or 3 A- Level subjects, Chemistry, Biology and any other subject. 

NOTE:  Physics and Mathematics are compulsory at the CXC CSEC/BGCSE level, whereas Biology and Chemistry are compulsory at CAPE/A-Levels

      OR

  •  UWI Preliminary and/or Introductory years in Pure and Applied Science Courses in Biology, Chemistry and one other

      OR

  • Triple major associate degree majoring in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject from approved Community Colleges with GPA greater than 3.5. 

      OR

  • Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts)

Non-Academic Considerations

  • All candidates are required to submit a short (300 words or less) autobiographic sketch outlining the reasons for their career choice.
  • Candidates must also produce evidence of their involvement in relevant extra-curricular/co-curricular activities, socially-oriented projects and voluntary community service in the year prior to their application.

 

B.Sc. Diagnostic Imaging and Radiography-    

                Three years

  • Six CSEC CXC subjects, (general proficiency Grades 1-III or equivalents) in English Language, Mathematics or Physics, Biology or Human and Social Biology, one other science subject in addition to two other subjects.
  •  Must be 18 years old in the year of entry.
  • Applicant must submit to an interview.

 

B.Sc. Nursing – Four Years (applicants should be at least 17 years old at the time of admission)

  • Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Biology/Integrated Science/Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and two other approved subjects. AND
  • Two  two-units at CAPE.(One subject from Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and one subject from any of the other subject areas, as specified by the Nursing Council of Jamaica).
  • Applicants must have Grade II passes in at least three of the five subjects.
  • Applicants must submit to an interview.

 

B.Sc. Physical Therapy- Three Years (age limit 18 years at time of admission)

  • Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level /BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics and Biology.
  • Two two-unit CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects, chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of admission.
  • Complete 60 voluntary hours in a Physical Therapy facility at the time of admission; at least 30 of which must be spent in an acute general hospital.  Candidate must make their own arrangements for doing voluntary hours.
  •  Submit to a personal interview.

 

Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences BBMedSci – Three years

 

  •  CSEC CXC General Proficiency (Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Two two-unit CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects, chosen from Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Physics/Mathematics

      OR

  •  UWI Preliminary Pure and Applied Science Courses – Chemistry, Life Sciences, Physics, Mathematics.

OR

  •  Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts)

FACULTY OF LAW

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) – Three years

  •  Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level /BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language.
  • Two two-unit CAPE subjects or 2 GCE A Level (passes with highly competitive grades)

                OR

  •  An Associate Degree from an approved tertiary level institution with a GPA of 2.5 and above.

OR

  • A degree from an approved university.

 

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

Bachelor of Engineering (B.Sc.)

  • Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE  subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Two two-unit CAPE or 2 GCE A Level passes in Pure/Pure & Applied Mathematics and Physics.

            

OR

  •  Equivalent qualifications from Community Colleges and Technical Schools.

 

NOTE: Holders of Associate degrees or diplomas from approved Caribbean tertiary level institutions must possess a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.5 or 65% and above.

 

 

FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (B.Sc.)

Three Years

  •  Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics, and at least two approved laboratory science subjects AND 2 - Two-Unit CAPE or 2 GCE A- Level subjects chosen from among Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics

Four Years (Preliminary Level)

  •  Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Levels/BGCSE (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics, and at least two approved laboratory science subjects.
  • Tropical Horticulture . Applicants must have passes at the  CXC CSEC  level in the following:  English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Geography, Chemistry and passes at the CAPE Level in Biology,   Geography or Chemistry OR  an  Associate Degree  in an appropriate discipline.

 

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (B.Sc.)

Three Years

  •  Five CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language and Mathematics AND 2 - Two-Unit CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects.

NOTE: Departmental requirements apply for B.Sc. Social Work (2 references, personal statement, and interview)

      Four Years

  • 5 CSEC CXC subjects (general proficiency Grades I-III) or GCE O'Level / BGCSEsubjects (Grades A-C) with Compulsory English Language and Mathematics.

 

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST:  English Language is compulsory for admission to all programmes of The University of the West Indies.  Candidates who do not possess a Grade 1 in CSEC CXC English A, a Grade A in GCE O’Level / BGCSE English Language, Grade 1 or 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or a Grade A in the GCE General Paper, are required to take an English Language Proficiency Test on entry. This test is administered several times throughout the year.

 

Specially Admitted Students

  1. In addition to the students admitted to courses leading to degrees, the following persons are eligible for special admission 
  2. Persons sponsored by governments or other employers to read certain courses, not for credit towards a University qualification, under a special arrangement.
  3. Private individuals who wish to pursue and develop a particular area of intellectual interest.
  4. Graduates of The University of the West Indies or of other recognised universities who wish to pursue a particular course or courses:

                       (a) To equip themselves for a particular job;

(b) To increase efficiency in the performance of a job;

(c) To satisfy entry requirements to a programme in this or another institution;

(d) To update or improve their knowledge in a subject.0

(i) Such students shall as be known as ‘specially admitted students”.

(ii)  Application for special permission must be made on the appropriate form.

(iii) To be considered for entry as “specially admitted students”, applicants should normally be matriculable.

(iv) Those students who do not satisfy the requirements for entry to the University must provide satisfactory evidence of their previous studies. In appropriate cases they may be required to sit for a special entrance examination.  In the assessment of the qualifications of applicants due allowance shall be made for their maturity.

(v) Specially admitted students shall be required to pay the appropriate fees as are in force.

(vi)  Such students shall be required to comply with the General Regulations for Students as are in force.

(vii) Normally, a specially admitted student should be allowed to take not more than (12) credits in any given year; nor more than a total of 24 credits under this category of registration.

(viii) Specially admitted students are permitted to write the University examinations appropriate to the course(s) they have been allowed to pursue.

(ix) Their membership of the University shall be subject to satisfactory reports on their work and conduct.

The credits obtained through special admissions can be counted towards UWI certification and University programmes provided they have been obtained within such time limits as are set from time to time by the institution.
