Competitive Athletic Facilities

The UWI, Mona's sports complex (the Mona Bowl) provides a mix of good quality facilities which are available year-round, especially in the summer and winter months, for both recreational and competitive sports. Perhaps the most famous athlete to be nurtured at the Mona Bowl is Usain Bolt, who has trained there along with other High Performance Centre athletes. The facilities, some of which have been upgraded or introduced under a recent Sports Enhancement Initiative include:

  • Three main football fields which can accommodate night and Premier League matches

  • An indoor sports court is used for a variety of sporting events including basketball, volleyball, indoor hockey, netball and badminton

  • The Frank Worrell Cricket Ground, which has amenities to host regional and international cricket matches. Two concrete practice pitches are also located at Chancellor Hall.

  • An Olympic sized swimming pool, with lighting for night use

  • Floodlit tennis and hard courts facilitate day and night play. Hard courts also exist at Chancellor, Taylor and Mary Seacole Halls of Residence

  • A training gymnasium and a small weights room

  • A newly established beach volleyball/football court

Further physical development includes:

  • Upgrades to the cricket pavilion

  • Expansion of the gym

  • Construction of a second indoor facility for basketball/volleyball/netball

  • Lighting and stands for the beach volleyball/football facility
