From Humble Beginnings Emerges a Star

Alicia "Tremor" Williams

Standing at six feet two inches tall is an ambitious, Christian, young lady who loves watching movies and is extremely passionate about her family. Alicia "Tremor" Williams, Hall Chairperson of the Mary Seacole Hall is no average student. She is a charming, dedicated and beautiful young lady who is set to achieve both academic and sporting excellence. Alicia was born in Kingston, Jamaica but grew up in Montego Bay and at the age of eleven migrated to the beautiful and serene Parish of St. Mary. She is very patriotic and an extremely jovial person. Her warmth and her infectious laughter is a beauty to behold. Alicia is a first generation child in that she is the first person from her family to matriculate to a tertiary level institution. Despite this humble beginning Alicia rises above the odds because she loves hard-work, loves God and lives life to its fullest.

Alicia admits that she was always an involved young lady who passionately took charge of her responsibilities and led by example. During her tenure at St. Mary High School Alicia (who was the then head girl) played netball for five consecutive years not because she really loved it but mostly because her High School coaches saw potential in her height. And even though she played netball Alicia still found time to represent her school at the Eastern School Championships where she not only threw, discus, javelin and shot-put but she always managed to medal in all these areas. Upon her completion of High School Alicia received an award for service to the school. This she humbly accepted because second to serving God serving others is quite a fulfilling experience to her.

After completing her studies at the St. Mary High School Alicia matriculated into the University of The West Indies where she is now a finalizing student doing a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. On campus Alicia continues to highlight her sporting prowess as she currently plays three sports for the University namely volleyball, badminton and netball. Alicia is a sports fanatic who is extremely popular on campus for her skills as an ace shooter for the UWI Netball team.

During her tenure at the University of The West Indies Alicia "Tremor" Williams has received a number of academic and sports award. From the get go Alicia maintained an "A" average topping all or most of her colleagues in the Social Work Department at the UWI Mona. As such she was the recipient of the Sydney Phillips scholarship, the Besson award for the top Social Work student and she is also a member of the Social Sciences honor society. Alicia is not only involved academically but she is also a "Seacolite to di bone" since last year she copped all the major awards at the annual Mary Seacole award ceremony. Alicia received approximately six to seven medals and a few plaques for the various sporting areas to which she pivotally played a role. Therefore it was rather fitting based on these and other achievements that Alicia was the recipient of all the major awards for the night – sports woman of the year, Most valuable player  for netball, role model of the year, leader of the year, and the premier award  Seacolite of the year.

Moving forward to her contribution to the University of the West Indies Alicia continuously represents the University's Netball team where she not only participates in regional competitions but she was also a member of the winning UWI champion team at the annual Florida Netball Classic.

Alicia "Tremor" Williams is a prime example of an academic yet sports oriented individual who is determined to succeed despite the odds. She constantly stays ahead of her school work because of the many qualities that she has developed or learned from the various sporting activities that she participates in. She exclaims that the game has taught her discipline not only on the court but also in her personal and academic life. She also attributes her ability to do effective group or team work to sports. Lastly although Alicia represents the University in two major sports she remains an 'A' student because she reads ahead, maximizes her library time, practice good time management skills, study in groups and delegate then follow up where appropriate since that is one of the hallmark of a good leader.
