Giftedness is an exceptional or extraordinary capability with respect to intellect, creativity and/or task commitment. A good rule of thumb is that the higher the student's level of cognitive or creative ability, the more differentiation and support will be needed.

Conceptions of Giftedness
There are many conceptions of giftedness. A good source for understanding the myriad perspectives is the book Conceptions of Giftedness, edited by Sternbeg and Davidson. The 2nd edition was published in 2005. The book contains a collection of chapters written by educators in the field who discuss their perspectives. See http://www.tcrecord.org/Content.asp?ContentId=12590 for a review of the book.
