How do we identify giftedness?

There are many ways to identify the gifted child. In the Jamaican context, we have been guided by those methods used in the US and the UK. Review the Renzulli Scale which is used as a referral tool for a complete assessment usually by a psychologist. Also, the PPT presentations on the right, under EduExchange Resources, offer some insights to assessment. What is your perspective on the matter?  How relevant are these methods to the Jamaican population? How do cultural differences impact on identification of gifted children in Jamaica?

Recently, I was conducting a workshop at a rural Jamaican school.  I asked if there were any gifted children in that school. The initial response was, 'no'. But as we began to define giftedness, we concluded that there were gifted children there with many gifts that were going unnoticed.  We also agreed that the school system was not catering to our gifted children adequately and there should be provision for the gifted child who has special needs.

Many years ago, I heard that research was done that revealed that many of our brightest young men are in prison. What does the community think of that?
