Regional Conference on Development of Education Being Planned

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Caribbean leaders have endorsed a three-day meeting to discuss the development of education in the region.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell said the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Sir Hilary Beckles had made a major presentation to regional leaders on education during their annual summit that ended here over the weekend.

“We talking about leveraging our knowledge regionally and internationally, and not in just one area,” he said, adding that his regional colleagues “were extremely impressed”.

While many students develop at a pace that the education system expects and are adequately challenged by the planned curricula for their age group, there are those who exceed these expectations and earn recognition for advanced academic skills early. Cases such as 10 year old Gianluca Webster who earned a grade one in CSEC Human and Social biology and 12 year old Kutu Ra who passed 6 subjects at the CSEC level brings into sharp focus the case of the gifted child. During this EduExchange, we will examine the issue of giftedness with specific focus on the identification and education of gifted students within the regular school system.

UWI Conducts First Telemedicine Broadcast Across Three Campuses

The first telemedicine broadcast by the University of the West Indies, UWI, using the region's only dedicated research and education network, CaribNet, was conducted on Wednesday November 6, 2013. The telecast originated from the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit (HWFMU) at the Mona Campus and was broadcast to medical students and faculty at the Open Campus sites in Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados. The HWFMU has been a hub for the promotion and advancement of Sexual and Reproductive Health (S&RH) for the past 30 years.
