Synopsis:

A combination of serum biochemical markers might predict underlying renal osteodystrophy better than would individual biochemical markers. A predictive model using bone histology and biochemical markers can be developed in the future.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the association of serum biochemical markers in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Jamaica for early detection of renal osteodystrophy (ROD).

Mycophenolate Mofetil in Minimal Change Nephrosis

Synopsis:

The use of mycophenolate mofetil in the treatment of steroid resistant minimal change disease has not been extensively studied, particularly in the African Caribbean population. This case highlights its use in steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome in an Afro-Caribbean adolescent.

INTRODUCTION

The use of mycophenolate mofetil in the treatment of steroid resistant minimal change disease has not been extensively studied, particularly in the African Caribbean population. This drug has fewer side effects than most immunosuppressants. On this basis, it may be preferred by both patient and physician. This case report highlights its use in a patient with minimal change nephrosis.

Renal Biopsy Findings in Jamaican Children

Synopsis:

In 270 Jamaican children undergoing renal biopsy, diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis was the commonest histology observed. Hepatitis B caused 83.3% of membranous nephropathy. The role of infection in the pathogenesis of renal disease in Jamaican children is probably underestimated.

Objective: To document the histological findings in Jamaican children undergoing renal biopsy in order to determine the relative prevalence of varying types of glomerular disease in the island.

Clinicopathological Features of Atypical Nephrotic Syndrome in Jamaican Children

Synopsis:

In this retrospective review of 157 renal biopsies in Jamaican children with nephrotic syndrome between 1985–2008, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis predominated. Hypertension, hypocomplementaemia, anaemia and renal failure in childhood nephrotic syndrome predicted more severe nephritis and should prompt nephrological consultation.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To document the histopathological spectrum of atypical nephrotic syndrome in Jamaican children and to make clinicopathological correlations which will assist physicians in identifying patients needing nephrology consultation.

Nutritional Markers in Patients undergoing Chronic Haemodialysis in Jamaica

Synopsis:

This study found that eighty per cent of patients on chronic haemodialysis had moderate malnutrition. Factors associated with malnutrition in patients on dialysis were having end-stage renal disease secondary to diabetes mellitus, dialysis duration for ≤ six months, low serum albumin, pre-dialysis serum creatinine of less than 880 μmol/L, low total cholesterol and presence of arteriovenous fistula access.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The main objective of the study is to assess the nutritional status in patients on chronic haemodialysis in Jamaica using the Subjective Global Assessment tool and to correlate this with measured serum nutritional biomarkers, and also to identify nutritional biomarkers that can be used to assess nutritional status of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: The Donor Profile in Trinidad and Tobago

A National Kidney Transplant Programme was started in Trinidad and Tobago in January 2006. Kidneys were procured from mainly living donors. This study looks at the profile and short-term outcomes of 60 consecutive living donors from start to May 2010.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU) of Trinidad and Tobago, first implemented in January 2006, was mandated to facilitate renal and corneal transplantation. Since then, 60 transplants have been performed utilizing living kidney donors. The aim of this study is to ascertain the typical donor profile and to highlight the safety involved with live kidney donation.
