Exercise for Healthy, Active Ageing: A Physiological Perspective and Review of International Recommendations

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2018.177
Pages:
351–56
Synopsis:
Individualized exercise regimens, including aerobic, resistance, balance and flexibility training help the older person overcome age-related physiological decline. Recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organizations for physical activity for improved quality of life for the ageing person are discussed.

Aerobic and Resistance Exercises Modulate Fibroblast Growth Factor-21 Level in Menopause Women with Type II Diabetes

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.551
Pages:
471-7
Synopsis:
In this study, aerobic and resistance exercises lead to increase of serum FGF21 levels in menopausal women with type II diabetes mellitus. Increased FGF21 level mediates beneficial effects of aerobic and resistance exercises on glucose and lipid metabolism in these patients.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine the relationship between exercises with the serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) levels and glucose and lipid profile in menopausal type II diabetic women.

The Effect of an XBOX Kinect Dance Intervention on the Affect of Sedentary University Students

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.510
Pages:
634–40
Synopsis:
The affective experiences of sedentary university students were compared before and after their participation in a six-week programme of regularly scheduled videogame based dance exercise activities. An increase in positive affect and a decrease in negative affect were observed.
ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effect of a video game dance exercise programme on the affect of sedentary university students.

Exercise Behaviour in Patients with Chronic Diseases

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.232
Pages:
340–5
Synopsis:
Exercise behaviour changes in patients with chronic illnesses and exercise self-efficacy were studied. Fifty-one per cent were in the contemplation stage and 29% in maintenance. Sixty-one per cent of the patients were non-adopters and 39% were adopters. Self-efficacy scores in stages four and five were significantly higher than in stage two. In patients with one chronic condition 55% were non-adopters compared to 71% with more than one condition.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was aimed at identifying the stages of exercise behaviour changes experienced by patients with chronic illnesses and the relationship with their exercise self-efficacy.

Method: The patients attending the Medical clinics at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), Jamaica, with chronic illnesses were studied. The data were collected using three questionnaires.

The Changes of Muscle FGF-6 Expression at Different Time Points after Exercise-induced Muscle Damage

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj/2012.285
Synopsis:
Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-6, accumulated almost exclusively in the myogenic lineage, possesses important functions in myogenesis. The changes of FGF-6 expression in regeneration and repair process after exercise-induced muscle damage indicate that FGF-6 is closely related to skeletal muscle regeneration and repair.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the changes of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-6 expression in the regeneration and repair process after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and the relationship with skeletal muscle regeneration and repair.

Knowledge of Students Attending a High School in Pretoria, South Africa, on Diet, Nutrition and Exercise

Issue:
Pages:
633–40
Synopsis:
Inactivity and low levels of physical activity are predisposing factors to many chronic diseases such as heart disease which are showing an increase in prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our results indicated that 38%, of the participants engaged in low activity levels, 58.8% in moderate activity levels and 3.2% in high activity levels and that generally, adolescents are not actively involved in adequate physical activities that could safeguard their present and future health and well-being.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The objective of this study was to ascertain the knowledge of students on the composition of a healthy diet, daily nutritional requirements and the importance of regular exercise.

A Prediction Equation for the Estimation of Cardiorespiratory Fitness Using an Elliptical Motion Trainer

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2012.194
Pages:
114–7
Synopsis:
In the United States of America, 6.2 million individuals use elliptical motion trainers. However, graded exercise test protocols to estimate peak oxygen consumption using elliptical motion trainers have not been developed for the general population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In the United States of America, 6.2 million individuals are using elliptical motion trainers in fitness centres. However, graded exercise test protocols to estimate peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) using elliptical motion trainers have not been developed for the general population.
