UWI and UNFPA launches Caribbean History Textbooks: a Gender Review

A recent Gender Review of several Caribbean History textbooks currently used in the CSEC / CXC Caribbean History syllabus has identified some disturbing trends that could weaken the struggle for gender equality and empowerment of women.
 

UWI Jamaica Language Unit Stage Creole Concert (POSTPONED)

The Jamaican Language Unit at UWI, Mona in collaboration with Kurfew Productions and the Senior Common Room (SCR) at the UWI, Mona will stage a concert celebrating the Jamaican Language on International Creole Day featuring One Third, Bryan Art, Infiniti and other special guest artistes. The Concert is set for Friday, October 26 at 7 pm at the SCR.
 
Tickets for the Concert cost J$500 and can be purchased at the UWI Bookshop. For more details interested persons may telephone 970-2953.
 

The Launch of "October Afternoon"

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Department of Literatures in English will host the launch of October Afternoon, a collection of poetry by UWI, Mona lecturer, Dr. Paulette Ramsay. The Book Launch is slated for Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona Campus.
 
October Afternoon is the second volume of poetry to be published by Dr. Ramsay, who is Head of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, UWI, Mona. Her first collection, Under Basil Leaves, was published in 2010.
 

Caribbean Child Research Conference 2012 Postponed

Due to the severe weather threatening Jamaica, a decision has been taken to postpone the Caribbean Child Research Conference 2012 scheduled for October 24-25, 2012 to November 6-7, 2012 at Jamaica Conference Centre.  This is to ensure the safety of local and overseas participants.
 
The Organizing Committee regrets any inconvenience caused and look forward to seeing you at the conference on November 6-7, 2012.

Public Lecture on Hillside Development Policy in Jamaica

“The Draft Hillside Development Policy” will be the topic for discussion at the public lecture being hosted by the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre at UWI. The Lecture will be delivered by Mr. Norman Harris, Engineering Geologist and Director for Research and Mapping at the Mines and Geology Division. The event is set to take place on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 6 pm at the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.

UWI, Mona Western Jamaica Campus Hosts Panel Discussion on Language in Jamaica and the Caribbean

The University of the West Indies, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus alongside the Montego Bay Community College and the St. James Parish Council present a panel discussion entitled, It’s not just Patwa: Language in Jamaica and the Caribbean.  The panellist on this occasion include:  Professor Devonish, Coordinator, Jamaica Language Unit, UWI, Mona, Dr. Nicole Scott, Lecturer, and Graduate Students: Kadian Walters, Kedisha Williams, Nickesha Dawkins in Linguistics at UWI, Mona. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the Montego Bay Civic Centre. 
 

Peter Tosh Symposium 2012

“Peter Tosh –Reggae Revolutionary and Equal Rights Advocate” is the title of the 2012 Symposium hosted by UWI, Mona to honour the legacy of Peter Tosh and celebrate the anniversary of Tosh’s birth on October 19, 1944. It is also an occasion to acknowledge the contribution of Tosh for his contribution to Reggae music as evidenced by being conferred the Order of Merit, posthumously. The Symposium is slated to coincide with Tosh’s birthday on October 19 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), The UWI, Mona. 
 

Caribbean Child Research Conference 2012 Examines Political Independence and Child Rights

The Sir Arthur Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), The UWI, Mona, in collaboration with UNICEF and several partners will stage the annual Caribbean Child Research Conference on November 6-7, 2012 at the Jamaica Conference Centre. The theme is Political Independence and Child Rights.
 

CHDS and UWI Seminar Explores Responses to Transnational Criminal Organizations

The Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies (CHDS) in partnership with the National Security and Strategic Studies Programe at The UWI, Mona recently presented a seminar entitled “Governance, Governability, and Security in the Americas: Responses to Transnational Criminal Organizations”. The seminar targeted senior and executive level security sector officers including Representatives of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Defence Force, and the Ministry of National Security. 
 

14th Annual Walter Rodney Lecture

The Institute of Caribbean Studies will host the 14th annual Walter Rodney Lecture on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Neville Hall Lecture Room (N1), UWI, Mona. The Lecture will feature the inaugural screening in Jamaica of the film, “Songs from Walter Rodney’s Choir” by Robert Lalljie. Professor Rupert Lewis, UWI, Mona will deliver a Reflection on the film.
