Collaboration in Distance Education in the Caribbean

Collaboration in Distance Education in the Caribbean: Potential and Possibilities will be the theme of a public forum to be held on Tuesday May 6, 2003 at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus. The speaker, Dr. Dennis Irvine, former Caribbean Regional Adviser to the President, The Commonwealth of Learning (1996 – 2000) and a former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Guyana (1969 – 1982), has a wealth of experience in higher education, distance education, and science, technology and development.

Congratulations

Four students from the Management Studies Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona placed third in the Annual Opportunity Funding Corporation Venture Challenge Competition held April 10-13, 2003, at the Omni Hotel, CNN Centre, Atlanta, Georgia in the USA.  The UWI team, Deloree Staple-Chambers, Kurt White, Andrew Barclay and Boysie Barnett, emerged from a field of 16 universities in the competition which was hosted by Clark Atlanta University. For its efforts the team received a cash prize of US$3000.00 and a trophy and was voted the most innovative team of the competition.

Congratulations to the Rev. Dr. Roderick Hewitt, the current Coordinator of the Chaplains and United Church Chaplain at UWI, who was inducted for a 3-year term as the new Moderator of the United Church in Jamaica and Cayman Islands.  He was inducted on Sunday, March 30 at the Opening Service of the Church’s Synod which was held at the Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios.  The Right Rev. Credit Union AGM

The UWI (Mona) and Community Coop Credit Union Limited will hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 24 at the Interfaculty Lecture Theatre, Mona Campus at 1:30 p.m.  Registration begins at 1:00 p.m.  The first 100 registered and seated persons will be eligible to participate in the raffle.

Dedication of Faculty’s Garden to Gloria Thompson

On Friday, March 28 at 8:30 am, the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), in association with the UWI Alumni Association, will formally dedicate one of the Faculty’s gardens to the memory of the late Gloria Thompson, former UWI employee.  Situated at the immediate rear of the FSS Main Building, the Gloria Thompson Garden is envisioned as a haven of quiet for students and employees, and also as a tribute to Mrs.

The Department of Economics will host a special public lecture on Caribbean Development in Troubled Times on Monday, April 7 at the Mona School of Business Executive Conference Room, UWI.  The lecture will be given by Professor Compton Bourne, President of the Caribbean Development Bank.

Dr. Denise Eldemire-Shearer

Congratulations to Dr. Denise Eldemire-Shearer, Senior Lecturer in The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, who was presented with the Distinguished Mentorship Award by the Behavioural and Social Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America. The presentation was made to her at the Fifty Fifth meeting of the Gerontological Society in Boston, USA.

Drama Text to be Translated into Finnish and Chinese

The book Planning Process Drama, written by Brian Heap, Staff Tutor in Drama at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI Mona and Pamela Bowell, Principal Lecturer in Drama at Kingston University UK, is to be translated into Finnish and Chinese.  The book which was published by David Fulton Publishers, UK has been widely distributed and is currently being used in drama education courses at several universities and training colleges in Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.  The request for translation into these two languages will ensure wider dis
