The Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Match

The Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Match will this year be a three-day test against the visiting Australian national team.  The match is scheduled for April 25 to 27 on the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. It is being coordinated by Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Hilary Beckles.

University Hospital’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations

On April 5, the University Hospital community will conclude the institution’s celebrations with a fundraising banquet at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge, UWI.  At the banquet, awards will be given to persons in recognition of service to the institution over the last fifty years. Guest speaker at the function will be Sir George Alleyne, Director Emeritus of PAHO’s regional office, one of the outstanding graduates of the medical programme.

University Student Awards Ceremony

The Annual University Student Awards Ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 12 in the Assembly Hall at the Mona Campus, starting at 6:30 p.m.  Guest Speaker will be Mr. Aubyn Hill, Managing Director, National Commercial Bank.  The ceremony will recognize students’ achievements in scholarship, co-curricular activities and acknowledge donors of scholarships and bursaries.

UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter)

The UWI Alumni Association will hold its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 21 in the Blue Room, at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge at 6:00 p.m.  Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.  The first 100 registered and seated persons will be eligible to win a special prize.

UWI Lecturers Launch Books April 7

The Department of Literatures in English will host a launch for two books in the Heineman Caribbean Writers Series on Monday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building.  They are Aunt Jen by Paulette Ramsay, Lecturer in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy and Songs of Silence by Curdella Forbes, Lecturer in the Department of Literatures in English. 

UWI stages Inaugural Caribbean Labour Policy Conference

Local, regional and international analysts of labour market issues, labour relations and labour legislation will be in Jamaica from Wednesday April 2 to Saturday April 5 for the Inaugural Caribbean Labour Policy Conference, a ground-breaking event which will be staged at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona.

Valedictory Service

The Annual Valedictory Service for the Final Year students of the Mona Campus will be held in the University Chapel on Sunday, April 6 at 9:00 a.m.   The service will be conducted by Rev. Trevor Edwards and Rev. Stephen Jennings will deliver the sermon.

World Health Day

Monday, April 7 is World Health Day.  The theme this year is Healthy Environments for Children.  To mark this day the University Health Centre will be hosting a panel discussion looking at issues such as early childhood development and stimulation, safety in daycare centres and safety at home.  This will take place between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the undercroft of the Senate Building.  There will also be a poster display on the topic.  The University community is invited.

World Zendo Kai Kan Karate Organization

The World Zendo Kai Kan Karate Organization will be kicking off its Tenth Anniversary Celebrations with the staging of its 7th Annual Martial Arts Tournament at the Assembly Hall, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus on Saturday, May 10.  The competition is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.  Promising to be an action packed competition, one of the premier martial arts tournaments on the Jamaican circuit and the only one with cash and trophies, local martial artistes will match their skills against several overseas competitors.  The events are as follows, Kata, Kumite, Musical Kata, Team

The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, (CARIMAC) University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona in collaboration with Youth.Now, an outreach organization for Jamaican youth has produced a series of ten television magazine programmes called Yow now being aired on CVM Television on Fridays at 6:00 p.m.
