This was an exploratory qualitative study that investigated the degree to which marijuana smokers at a tertiary institution perceived their susceptibility to mental illness. Risk perception was found to be low, as the drug’s benefits seemingly outweighed its risks.

Of the 647 inmates who participated in this study, majority reported lifetime use of alcohol (78% convicted, 80% remanded) and marijuana (75% convicted, 78% remanded) with an initiation age of 15 years in both cases. Drug use was found to be associated with stealing, robbery and recidivism.

This study assesses the performance of medical students in the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) of the final MBBS examination across the four campuses of The University of the West Indies, (2001 and 2002). The OSCE scores in the medicine and therapeutics examination are generally uniform across all campuses of the University.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a group of adult psychiatric patients at the University Hospital of the West Indies was 28.9% and could represent a pathway to the future development of Type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Screening and continuous monitoring will allow for early intervention and possibly prevention of increased morbidity and mortality in this vulnerable population.
